CAC ARTS NEWS No. 152
08/24/04
Editor's Note:
This
last week was a big one for me. I submitted a concept plan to the Estes Park
Urban Renewal Authority (EPURA) for a $3.25 million arts facility to be managed
by the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park. I won't bore you with all the why
and wherefores, but the window of opportunity has opened and I initiated the
first step.
It
will be interesting to see where this takes us. I made a proposal that I
believe has a strong basic reality to it and I am optimistic. I will let you
all know what happens as it happens. I passionately believe that the arts of
any community must pull together and I hope this will be a model for others to
look at.
"Art
and Culture" is a quality of life issue that we all wish was funded in
some manner that worked. You read all the horror stories and the success
stories in these newsletters each week as I do and I can tell you that I wish I
had the answer to what will always work. I'm a concept guy (a Disney Imagineer
at one time and proud of it) and I like to ask the question "what if"
and then see if a concept - a vision - has possibilities. Past that step, then
I'm into passion. (Sounds like the stages of getting into marriage doesn't it?)
I have been lucky with some concepts that turned into reality and I don't mind
saying that we are celebrating our 51st wedding anniversary the first week of
September with a cruise to Alaska. So in some respects, I have a track record
and we will just have to see how this arts facility concept may fly.
Yours,
Paul Saunders

OPENSTAGE

PRESENTS

FOR
IMMEDIATE
RELEASE

The
Play's the Thing
- a Frothy Witty Delight!
Fort
Collins -OpenStage Theatre & Company presents The Play's the Thing, a barbed satire by the
eminent Hungarian playwright, Ferenc Molnar, and adapted by the great English
humorist, P.G. Wodehouse. Directed by Deborah Marie Hlinka, The Play's
the Thing
is a timeless, hilarious romp set on the Italian Riviera of the 1920's.
The Play's the Thing runs August 21 through September 18, 2004 at the Lincoln
Center, 417 W. Magnolia in Fort Collins.
"The
joy of directing The Play's the Thing," says Hlinka, "lies in accentuating
the underlying humor and cunning dialogue of Molnar's script while paying
homage to the sly British wit of P.G. Wodehouse's masterful adaptation."
She continues, "Wodehouse brings a light, frothy balance to the biting,
cynical humor of Molnar, who wrote from his own experience and infused himself
into his amusing and farcical characters. Wodehouse, most famous for his
classic Jeeves and Wooster stories, skillfully translated Molnar's characters
into the nimble banter of British comedy. Molnar and Wodehouse are perfect for
each other!"
"Featuring the accomplished talents of Ken Fenwick and Marlin May as the
famous writing team of Turai and Mansky, and incorporating a play within a play
and the Molnar technique of directly addressing the audience, The Play's the
Thing
exposes the absurdity of human nature with high-spirits, charm and hilarity.
Performances
of The Play's the Thing will be May August 21 through September 18,
2004 on Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m. with one Thursday performance

Yair
Dalal
is a violinist, and oud (middle eastern fretless lute) player and
composer without peer in taking the sounds of the Middle East and creating a
graciously contemporary take based upon ancient themes. His
background as one of the few living representatives of Arab Jewish music from
Iraq has allowed him to develop this rare mix of traditional and modern, Jewish
and Arab, Oriental and Western. Yair Dalal attracted worldwide recognition in
1994 performing his composition, "Zaman El Salaam" (A Time for Peace)
with Maestro Zubin Mehta, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and a Palestinian and
Israeli children's choir at the Nobel Peace Prize Gala concert in Oslo, Norway.
He is a rising star on the world music scene, a featured act at WOMAD
festivals worldwide, and a leading voice for peace. www.YairDalal.com
"Judging
from the dialect of war, retaliation and precariously balanced cease-fires that
dominates any discussion of world peace, perhaps a new language is needed to
establish a society truly worth defending. Perhaps this new universal
tongue should be music. Yair Dalal certainly makes a strong case. The
violinist and oud player is a master performer and composer who transforms
traditional Middle Eastern music into modern-day magic. Dalal
successfully combines music from the Arab and Jewish worlds into a harmonious
blend of melody. Now if only the people of the Middle East could follow
suit. But music is a good place to start. " -The Boulder
Weekly
"The
music of Yair Dalal emerges from an authentic place, a deep feeling of
tradition, message and beauty. We find ourselves in Iraq, in the Balkans,
in India and in the desert. In his homeland, he is credited as an outstanding
representative of ethnic Israeli music" -Israel Broadcast
Authority
"In
my imagination I see the camel caravans with their people and their cargoes
passing through the desert and at night, they tell stories and sing songs, play
musical instruments and dance. Sometimes they are confident, and
sometimes cautious. The fragrant smoke of their fires rises to my
nostrils. Today, the desert routes and their cities serve as the tourist
sites of Ovdat and Petra. Few of the tourists stay long, and most come
for but a short time, look around, get excited, and move on. The perfume
routes that in the past linked peoples and cultures once again link people of
different nations, religions and cultures. But the experience is not yet
complete. Peace does not yet reign in the Middle East and a complete
journey along the Perfume Route from the shores of the Indian Ocean to the
Mediterranean coast remains a Utopian dream. However, the Perfume Road
can be transformed into a peace road, a route of brotherhood between peoples
living in the region because PEACE is the most precious merchandise of all."
-Yair Dalal

THEATREWORKS
MAKES
A NEW MAP FOR
OLD
TREASURE
Robert Louis StevensonÕs
Treasure Island
will take on a whole new life when THEATREWORKS presents the world premiere of
an original adaptation by Artistic Director Murray Ross. The production,
sponsored by Vectra Bank, is being staged in conjunction with the Pikes Peak
Library DistrictÕs All Pikes Peak Reads project.
The
production will play Sept. 24-Oct. 17, in the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theater at
3955 Cragwood Drive in Colorado Springs. Performances are Thursday
through Saturday evenings at 7:30, Saturday matinees at 2pm, and Sundays at
4:00 p.m. Special student matinees will be schedule in addition to the
run.
Treasure
Island
has been filmed for television and screen dozens of times, and there are a
number of existing stage versions as well. So why create a new
adaptation? THEATREWORKS simply didnÕt care for the stage adaptations in
print---Òthey all read and looked like bad pirate movies,Ó says Ross, who went
back to the novel for his inspiration. ÒStevensonÕs characters,Ó he says, Òare
vivid, and his dialogue is terrific, and of course the story is one of the best
ever written.Ó But because the novel has so many locations, including an
old inn, a ship, a stockade, a cave, a small boat, and several places on
Skeleton Island, it does not naturally lend itself to the stage.
THEATREWORKS
has solved the location problem by staging the play as if it were being acted
out in the studio of N. C. Wyeth, the great artist whose illustrations for the
novel in the 1911 edition are now almost as famous as the book itself.
Beyond this, Ross is unwilling to disclose details---apart from conceding the
part of the young boy hero will be played by a girl. ÒWe just felt that
since this is a community book, we didnÕt want to leave out half the
population.Ó Stevenson specifically excluded women from Treasure
IslandÑhe
was determined to write a boyÕs story. But in the THEATREWORKS version,
written for a new century, Jim Hawkins becomes Jane Hawkins, a young girl who
rises to the challenge of a sea voyage, treasure hunting, pirates, and all the
derring do demanded of a boy hero. The production is sure to be a treat
for the whole family.
As
usual, THEATREWORKS has assembled a stellar cast for its production.
Making her debut in the leading role is 15 year old Tina Ivlev, who won the
role against fierce competition. Legendary local actor Paul Mathewson
will play Long John Silver, and not because he is the only actor in the region
physically qualified for the role (Mathewson, a purple heart Vietnam veteran,
lost his leg fighting in Vietnam). Ross says Mathewson is the ideal actor
for the role because he is dangerous, charming, fatherly, elegant and
charismatic. Other members of the pirate crew include Fred Tower, Steve
Wallace, Joe Forbeck, and Bob Pinney as
the
marooned Ben Gunn. The ship will be captained by Mike Anselmi. Mark
Hennessy is the doctor, and Michael Preston the redoubtable Squire Trewlaney.
Captain
Flint, the as the cookÕs bird, will be played by a parrot to be named later.
The
design team for Treasure Island includes scenery by Marisa Frantz, lighting by
Japhy Weideman, costumes by Betty Ross, and music and sound by Mark
Mosher. Murray Ross directs.
In
addition, THEATREWORKS is thrilled to have Vectra Bank aboard as a presenting
sponsor. Vectra Bank is ColoradoÕs sixth
largest bank with assets of $2.6 billion and 40 branch locations throughout
Colorado. They offer comprehensive financial services for individuals and
businesses. For more information, log on to www.vectrabank.com.
