The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.  Aristotle

Editors Note:

Last week's edition of CAC Arts News got through to all AOL subscribers! How about that? But today is another day. As Louis Armsttong sings "It's A Wonderful World!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the week that one of two shoes drop here in Estes Park. On Wednesday morning the EstesPark Urban Renewal Authority (EPURA) will decide whether a proposal I submitted on behalf of the Cultural Arts Council for a 3.25 million dollar Cultural Arts Center facility building or a commercial developers proposal for more shops will be selected for Approval In Concept. EPURA bought a downtown gas station for $1 million and will use a portion of the lot to extend a river walk west.
Two plans were presented to EPURA.
One plan from a developer that remained anonymous is for commercial development on the ground level and living accommodations on the second floor. EPURA has told the developer that approximately 5,000 square feet on the south end of the property be set aside and be shared equally with the Art Center and the Cultural Arts Council and at "less than market rates". (what ever that is! and for how long? 99 years? Hmmmm!).
The other plan was a proposal by the Cultural Arts Council for a multi-purpose Arts center for the non-profits (about 40 at last count). This proposal is not to be confused with the original plan for a Theater and Arts complex for the south side of Fall River in the Weist parking lot in the center of town. That complex was conceived out of a long history of searching for a viable arts facility by the Cultural Arts Council, FOSH and EPAC. From the Stanley Concert Hall, the west patio at the Conference Center, the Visitors Center to the Weist Parking lot. It would take a book to spell out the history and cast of characters (me included!) to tell the complete story. To the Town Trustee's credit, the Weist Theater complex was studied with paid consultants and we all had our day for input with the architect. That was historical in of its self! However, the facility capital costs and annual operating costs seemed to dim the prospects of the project becoming a reality under the building and operation by the Town of Estes Park.
Timing is everything. The Cultural Arts Council submitted a proposal that would "off load" some of the arts activity proposed for the Performance Theater. With an arts facility built by the arts community for the arts community at a much lower annual operating cost, it became apparent to the Town that the Theater facility could be lightened up and with  a lower annual operating cost. A study by architects, Thorp and Associates is underway. However, Wednesday maybe the day one of the proposals, one from the developer and one from the Cultural Arts Council is selected. Despite the EPURA restriction on the developer for the "arts", the decision will have a lasting consequences on the arts in the Estes Valley for years, if the proposal for the Cultural Arts Center is NOT selected. And the Council's proposal does have a gallery space equal to and better than the developers proposal for the Art Center!  This is probably the only time that the planets have come into alignment for something great to happen.
I know this is not a big deal for the Colorado arts except victories are few in the arts world of Colorado and I hope to have good news. We could all use some.
Experienced and seasoned Keyboard Player wants to work!!!
Experienced, seasoned Keyboard player with pro gear seeking a second or primary, (if there is enough work), working band. Blues, classic rock, old R&B, soul, Funk, Gospel, Country and Bluegrass. Road travel OK if money is right. NOTE: I don't play note for note copy of cover tunes, and I stick to actual "Keyboard sounds", (piano, organ, wurly, Rhodes, clav.)I Don't like to play horn patches, etc. I am not a sheet music reader, but am a "quick study" at learning songs. I bring plenty of experience and a good, pro attitude. I'm a team player and am interested in what sounds and works best for the band as a unit. Also, I am a non-drinker, so no worries about getting too intox. to play. Thanks for reading!
Friday, October 15, 2004 - Denver, Colorado - The Da Vinci Quartet's novel and enriching approach to music presentation in the cultural context of other art forms is about to take a leap in an exciting direction.
In its First Annual Concert & Architectural Tour on Nov. 6, the Da Vinci Quartet Association (DVQA) will present not only one of its popular and elegant house concerts, but also an excursion through several homes in a guided tour titled "The Mid-century Modern Homes of William Muchow."
 "The interesting architectural angle of this new salon-style Da Vinci Quartet series builds on our past success when we offered a 'Da Vinci Quartet in Historic Places ' series in Colorado Springs for many years," explained Susan Jensen, second violinist, of the event that is unique in local concert presentations. "The 'Muchow and Music ' event that we are presenting in Denver for the first time this year also reflects our goals for the future, to offer many more distinctive occasions where compelling music complements a visually aesthetic setting."
 The event begins at 1 p.m. at the home of Norv and Kate Brash, 3112 S. Monroe, Denver; after a walking tour through several homes in the vicinity that reflect Muchow's influence and creative force over the past 50 years, the DVQA affair continues at the Brash residence with a brief architectural talk by Norv Brash, followed by a Da Vinci quartet performance and cocktail supper.
"We're excited to present the first of what we hope will be an annual tradition that combines music, architectural art, stimulating conversation, and inspired thought among all who attend," said Jensen.
News from the Colorado Alliance for Arts Education
On September 14, 2004, CAAE hosted its Annual Meeting, which is open to all CAAE members and the general public. Featured speaker, Jared Polis, Chairman of the Colorado State Board of Education highlighted the arts as the key to instilling in students the Òvalues of creativityÓ, the Òvalues of curiosityÓ and the Òdesire to learnÓ.
Remember, Be SmART. Include the Arts!
Other speakers at the Annual Meeting were Mary Fulton of Education Commission of the States, Susan Keene of the Englewood Public Schools PEAK Project, and Michelle Moss, Denver Public Schools Board Member.
 Mary Fulton highlighted ECSÕ new arts in education policy work. Visit www.ecs.org/ArtsinEducation for information on arts education research and visit www.ecs.org/Huckabee and see why Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee felt the arts were important enough to launch this 2-year nationwide study!
 The Englewood Public Schools recently received a grant of $813,000 to study the effects of arts in education through the PEAK Project. The results of their work will likely become part of the ECS initiative!
