COLORADO ARTS CONSORTIUM
http://www.coloradoartsconsortium.org
Editor's Note:
Last
year at this time of the year I turned this space over to Santa Claus after we
talked about the arts.
I
hope you don't mind if I repeat it this year. pbs
HO,
HO and hello!
As
Santa Claus I'm not usually asked for my opinion or thoughts about the arts.
However, after thinking about it, I would enjoy giving you a gift of an honest
celebration of the arts. I've been around for a very long time and a part of
the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus but no one has built a church
or congregation around my presence. I am that part of you, no matter what
religion or background that insists on giving to others.
There
is a need for wonder, a hunger for magic. Artists I have observed, are
wonderful in giving inspiration, magic and color to people. Consider a dancer
who is carried by beautiful music, a musician who with heart and soul performs,
a painter who lays on color after color to amaze. All and many others give of
themselves in many ways. Yes, many for a living, but always with a sense of
offering what they have as a gift.
And as with me, the best part is in the
receiving! What artist does not appreciate the applause, the light in someone's
eye or the simple acknowledgment that what you have done is appreciated. I try
to honor the wonder and magic of the Christmas season, but the gifts I receive
are the smiles, the twinkle in many different peoples eyes. Every now and then,
some mother places her new born baby in my arms so that I may gaze on
that innocent face and wonder to myself what the child will become in life. A
dancer? A musician? An artist of any kind and hopefully a kindly soul who in turn
will give to receive? Put away the sad news we hear and read everyday and enjoy
the season to recognize what the arts mean to all our lives. Spread your magic!
Thank
you and a Merry Christmas!
Santa

Don't
Let Creativity Become An Endangered Species!
*
Do you believe Colorado schools should provide students with tools and
strategies that foster creative problem solving - skills they'll need in the
workforce? * Do you believe kids learn better when they are
immersed in interactive environments that inspire them and make them eager to
be at school? * Do you believe kids deserve the opportunity to explore the
world around them through music, visual art, dance and theatre?
Yes!
So do we!
And providing students with exposure to
the arts in education is the key!
Take action today!
Support the Colorado Alliance for Arts
Education
and help us bring the arts to more
schools, more teachers, and more students.
We
are truly grateful for your generous support that we have received in the past.
The tide is changing and support for
arts education is gaining momentum like never before!
Your
contribution to help us meet this year's goal ($5,000) will allow us to:
Ÿ Work with even more teachers around our state to
promote the use of the arts in every classroom; Ÿ Expand the dialogue
around arts education within our state;
Ÿ Provide increased opportunities for
students to gain exposure to the arts at all levels of school, K-12, and
hopefully beyond.
And
now the Arts Education statistics you can tell to all of your friendsŠ
The
Arts provide our children with:
*
Improved academic achievement * Enhanced critical-thinking
abilities * A means to transcend cultural and learning disability barriers *
A greater inclination towards pursuit of higher education

ROCK
CANYON THEATER PRESENTS "THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW"
The
Theater Department at Rock Canyon High School announces its first play,
"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." From the classic tale scripted by Vera
Morris and adapted by Washington Irving, comes a spooky show filled with
hilarious action and fun. The story begins when a goofy schoolmaster, Ichabod
Crane, comes to the tired town of Sleepy Hollow and is haunted by a horrible
ghost (the Headless Horseman). The excitement promises to be fun for the whole
family.
Performances are set for 7:30
PM Friday and Saturday, December 10 & 11 in the auditorium at Rock Canyon High School, located AT 5810 McArthur Ranch Rd., Highlands Ranch.
Doors will open at 6:30 PM.
Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door. Reservations are not
required. The cost is $6 for students, $4 for children under 12, and $8 for
adults. All ticket proceeds go toward future productions by Rock Canyon High
School's Theater Department. For tickets and more information, call
Rock Canyon High School at 303-387-3000.
"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" marks the first ever theatrical
production in the Rock Canyon High School auditorium. The production is
directed and produced by Karen Deger McChesney with Guest Artist and Actress
Tracy Shaffer Witherspoon serving as assistant director. Witherspoon teaches at
the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

Does
your organization have members in Utah? Did you know that if one Utah-based

that require "opt-out" instructions and more than half of them
mandate that a request be honored. Read this article to learn how to stay

will be on display at Walker Fine Art, 11th and Cherokee St., in Denver, CO.
Destination Dreamland
December 2-18, 2004. In this series,
ArtistsRegister.com member Annette Coleman uses old woodcuts and linocuts as
well as drawn images to evoke the mystery of dreams. These images are copied on
Mylar and suspended within wax and pigments. Each 'film like clip' is shown in
12" squares or larger. Some of the 'clips' stand alone as one fleeting
thought. Others are grouped together to represent the disjointed storyline that
the dreams are made of. This body of work features new clay work and Polaroid
transfers by Jean Smith. The clay work deals with flowers and are both two and
three-dimensional; the Polaroid transfers are divided into two themes,
Southwestern and New Orleans with images from experiences in these places;
dreamy and realistic. Artist's Reception: Thursday, December 2, 5:00-9:00pm.

MAYOR'S
OFFICE OF ART, CULTURE AND FILM
CHANGES NAME TO
DENVER OFFICE OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS
New name inclusive of all forms of art
office works to promote
(DENVER) The Mayor's Office of
Art, Culture and Film has changed its name to the
Denver Office of Cultural Affairs.
In conjunction with the office name change, the
name of the Commission on Art, Culture
and Film has been changed to the Denver
Commission on Cultural Affairs.
The changes became official with the passing of two
separate ordinances by Denver City Council
on Monday, October 25, 2004.
"The
new names of the Office and Commission are more inclusive of all the forms of
art that the Office and Commission work to promote," stated Denise
Montgomery, Director of the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs. "In
addition, the new names better identify us with the Denver community as we work
regionally and beyond," said Noel Congdon, Chair of the Denver Commission
on Cultural Affairs.
"I fully support these name changes
and their goal of more fully representing the
abundant diversity of Denver's artistic
and cultural landscape," said Mayor
Hickenlooper. "Our
administration is fully committed to and engaged in Denver's
cultural community, and the work of the
Denver Office of Cultural Affairs is integral
to our vision of the continuing
evolution of our creative, culturally vibrant city."
The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs
remains directly linked to the Mayor's Office,
with
Director Denise Montgomery reporting to Mayor Hickenlooper. In addition,
Mayor Hickenlooper continues to be a champion of the office, as evidenced by
his recent support of a 19% budget increase for the office. With the
increase, which will bring the office's total budget to $1.1 million in 2005,
the office will add an Economic
Development Specialist to its staff
whose focus will be on the commercial arts,
including film, the music industry and
art galleries.
Culture has been and continues to be a
priority for Mayor Hickenlooper. To date the
following
items have been accomplished by Mayor Hickenlooper in conjunction with the
Denver Office of Cultural Affairs: Secured the bequest of the Clyfford Still
collection for the City of Denver. Established Denver Poet Laureate program.
Engaged over 25,000 people in the One
Book, One Denver program, and through the
program
provided 3,280 books to DPS and 2,000 books to DPL. Raised awareness of
DPS's literacy programs in the process. Launched an expanded program of free
concerts in 2004 including the inaugural Five Points Jazz concert and Latino
Rhythms event. Completed 25 public art projects.
Facts about the Denver Office of
Cultural Affairs:
The office currently consists of a staff
of eight.
The office's events and programs
include:
Mayor's Awards for Excellence in the
Arts
One Book, One Denver
Doors Open Denver - new for 2005
City Free Concert Series
Colorado Performing Arts Festival
Denver Poet Laureate
Public Art program
Performing Arts Stabilization Grants
program
The overarching goal of the office is
access to Denver's art and culture. On average,
the office's events and programs achieve
participation of over 100,000 people total
per year, not including the countless
people who experience the city's public art each
day.
Programs sponsored by the office are generally collaborative efforts with other
city offices, local business and nonprofit organizations.
Facts about the Denver Commission on
Cultural Affairs:
The Denver Commission on Cultural
Affairs acts as an advisory board to the Denver
Office
of Cultural Affairs. The Commission is comprised of dynamic and accomplished
Denver leaders in the areas of the arts, business and education, all of whom
are appointed by the Mayor. The Commissioners are strong advocates of the arts
and culture, and are committed to the mission and goals of the Denver Office of
Cultural Affairs. Meetings of the Commission are open to the public. They
are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 4:00 p.m. at 1380 Lawrence
Street in the conference room on the third floor.
The mission of the Denver Office of
Cultural Affairs is to advance the arts and
culture
in the City and County of Denver.
