COLORADO ARTS CONSORTIUM

http://www.coloradoartsconsortium.org

Editor's Note:

The Colorado Arts Consortium has been the one of the more active arts agencies through the years. We came about to offer technical assistance when so many communities where involved in creating Arts Councils. The Denver Metro area has always had a strong support network and the Consortium looked to outlying communities. The consortium also looked to arts advocacy when we felt that the arts were under funded. What a struggle. Perhaps we took on to much with too little. However, this newsletter was created to reach across the state to arts agencies, governments and individuals with state arts news and the bigger picture of world art.

There are over two hundred e-mail addresses that receive this newsletter and very few cancelations over the 167 weeks which tells me that you read the newsletter to some degree. If it becomes to much to read and you are tired of hitting the delete key then certainly, I would hope you would cancel your subscription.

With all volunteers and no money coming to the Consortium for operating or programs, the Consortium is at a low ebb but lives on in our volunteer work. I have agreed to continue this newsletter as long as you want it and I am able to do it.

I want to express my deep appreciation to all the Consortium board and regional reps that have stayed with it on your behalf. I also want to thank all of you that have corresponded with me, sent your newsletters and press releases. It keeps me going week after week.

All of us at the Colorado Arts Consortium wish you the best this holiday season and on into the new year. (Being Santa has been very rewarding and I now realize I'm old looking enough to play Father Time at New Year parties. I hope you don't mind but I will send a photo of Mr and Mrs Santa on Friday.)

Stay in touch,

Paul Saunders,

Editor

THEATREWORKS FRANKENSTEIN COLLABORATION OPENS OFF BROADWAY TO RAVE REVIEWS

THEATREWORKS annual fall collaboration with the Pikes Peak Library DistrictÕs All Pikes Peak Reads project yielded wonderful results for Manhattan-based theatre company The Flying Machine this holiday season.  The company has just opened Frankenstein at New York City's Soho Rep to wonderful reviews.

When Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was first chosen as the book selection for 2003 All Pikes Peak Reads project, THEATREWORKS set off to find the right company to adapt the novel for its stage.  Making its world premiere in Colorado Springs, The Flying Machine's Frankenstein played to sold-out crowds in the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theatre before moving to Soho Rep this month.  Here's just a sample of the reviews it has received:

"Fun and imaginative- a one-of-a-kind journey.  A far-out ride theatergoers will not want to miss!"

www.nytheatre.com

"Entrancing and enchantingly staged"

Theatremania.com

"An absorbing, inventive production"

Newsday

"Just the ticket for a dark and dreary night in the dead of winter. As original in concept as it is inventive in design.  A thinking person's thriller."

Variety

"Just when you thought Frankenstein was doomed to book clubs and film retrospectives, an imaginative young company called the Flying Machine has brought this tale of scientific hubris vividly back to life."

The New York Times

The Flying Machine was originally commissioned by THEATREWORKS to create this new work, and it made its world premiere in the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theater on Sept. 19, 2003.  Look for nest year's book selection to be announced Spring of 2005.

THEATREWORKS SNARES FIVE DENVER POST OVATION AWARD NOMINATIONS

THEATREWORKS is pleased to announce it has received five Denver Post Ovation Award nominations for it's 2004 season, including Best Year by a Company.

The Ovations honor the best work in the state among the 142 theater productions reviewed or seen by Denver Post critics in 2004. This year, a record 38 companies received at least one nomination, with honorees from as far away as Creede, Fort Collins and Denver.

THEATREWORKS 2004 nominations include the following:

BEST YEAR BY A COMPANY, BEST DRAMA -A Streetcar Named Desire, BEST ACTOR, DRAMA -  Gene Gillette, A Streetcar Named Desire - BEST ACTRESS, DRAMA - Jane Fromme, A Streetcar Named Desire, SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA - Kennedy Reilly-Pugh, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

" We are absolutely thrilled to have our work acknowledged by critics at the Denver Post whom we greatly respect, " stated Amanda Mountain, THEATREWORKS Sales and Marketing Director.  " This is a testament to the talent we have here in Colorado Springs, and at THEATREWORKS."

Winners of the 2004 Ovation Awards will be selected by theatre critic John Moore and published in the Denver Post on Dec. 26.

THEATREWORKS is dedicated to creating challenging and innovative productions of classic and contemporary theatre for the enjoyment, education and stimulation of our community, including the Pikes Peak Region, the University of Colorado, and, on occasion the larger world.

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH DANCE

Denver, Colorado - SPEAKING OF DANCE is pleased to announce that we will present the Winter session of "Building Community Through Dance," our community program of free dance workshops in which neighborhood residents of all ages work together to use the art of dancemaking as a vehicle to enhance community-building.

SPEAKING OF DANCE has just completed the Fall session of Building Community Through Dance. During the first six and a half years of this highly successful program, over 1,100 children and adults have attended workshops in our home neighborhood of Capitol Hill and in sister neighborhoods. Over 4,000 audience members have attended the free final performances pieces choreographed and danced by participants at the end of the winter session each year. Participants report that their lives change as a result of the programs: they develop trust in others, increase their self-esteem, and create stunning, heart-felt, original choreography. People of all ages created enduring intergenerational friendships, and children increased their school attendance and improved academically.

The Winter 2004 session of the workshops will run for eight weeks beginning in January. No previous dance experience is necessary. Workshops are held at Del Pueblo, Swansea, Moore School, Cheltenham and Beach Court Elementary Schools and the First Unitarian Church. The workshops teach dance and community building skills through the group process in a safe environment, and participants use them to tell their own stories in their own way.

In addition to the weekly workshops, rehearsals for the final performances will be held on Saturdays at the Temple Events Center Uptown, 9:30-noon, January 15-March 5. Under the direction of Deborah Reshotko, SOD Artistic Director, workshop participants aged eight to 78 will choreograph dance on the theme of "Working for Peace." The performances will take place on March 11 and 12, 2005, at the Temple Events Center Uptown. For information about participation, please call 303-722-0902.

SOD is a community-based dance organization with considerable experience collaborating with neighborhood organizations to achieve common goals. SOD Artistic Director and choreographer Deborah Reshotko and her dance company work with Capitol Hill residents to use art to build bridges between individuals and groups. SOD has received two special National Endowment for the Arts grants in recognition of our outstanding community arts work.

This community development project is funded in part by generous grants from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, the City and County of Denver, the Denver Foundation, Xcel Energy Foundation, the Janus Foundation, and Capitol Hill United Ministries. Performance space has been donated by the Temple Events Center Uptown, a non-profit organization whose mission is to support arts and culture in the metro area. Rehearsal space has been donated by the First Unitarian Church and the Temple Events Center Uptown.

DENVER OFFICE OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS

 AWARDS $50,000 IN GRANTS TO

 LOCAL PERFORMING ARTS ORGANIZATIONS

(DENVER)  The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs is pleased to announce the

disbursement of $50,000 in grants to local performing arts organizations through its

Denver Performing Arts Stabilization Grants program.  This year there are 34 awardees.

Funds from this program may be used for any needs or functions that are consistent

with the recipient organizations' missions.  With its limited funding allocation, the

program places a priority on assisting smaller, developing organizations.  Fourteen

organizations will each receive $1,176.47, and 20 organizations will each receive

$1,676.47.  Organizations with operating budgets below $200,000 will receive the

 larger award.

"The Performing Arts Stabilization Grants are an investment in our community," said

Denise Montgomery, Director of the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs.  "The arts

enhance our quality of life, and we are happy to be able to support the great work of

 these organizations."

The Denver Performing Arts Stabilization Grants were established in 1993 as a way of

supporting the performing arts in the City and County of Denver.  Over 410 grants have

been awarded, totaling over $735,000 since the creation of the program.  63 performing

arts organizations have received funding through the program since its inception, with

most of the groups maintaining their eligibility status from year to year.

The mission of the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs is to advance the arts and

culture in the City and County of Denver.

 ANOTHER SAD GOODBYE

Hello Friends and Supporters of IAT,

In December of 2002, Industrial Arts Theatre began remodelling and renovating its new

home, The Federal Theatre.  It was a huge undertaking and we took a risk in accepting

the building in an "as is" condition in return for lower rent.

It has been rewarding and challenging but unfortunately, the cost of keeping the

building operational has proven to be too high, both in terms of money and manpower.

The company has therefore ceased its operations on December 10, 2004.  Its current

production, A Christmas Twist, has been closed and the company will vacate the Federal

on the 1st of the year.
