Mayor's Office of Art, Culture & Film Changes Name -- The MayorÕs Office of Art, Culture and Film
has changed its name to the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs. In conjunction
with the office name change, the name of the Commission on Art, Culture and
Film has been changed to the Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs. The changes
became official with the passing of two separate ordinances by Denver City
Council on Monday, October 25, 2004.
ÒThe
new names of the Office and Commission are more inclusive of all the forms of
art that the Office and Commission work to promote,Ó stated Denise Montgomery,
Director of the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs. ÒIn addition, the new names
better identify us with the Denver community as we work regionally and beyond,Ó
said Noel Congdon, Chair of the Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs.

Legislative
Session Underway -- The 2005 legislative
session is underway with new leadership in place and Governor Owens' State of
the State address held January 11th. With the change in control of the
legislature shifting to the Democratic party, all key leaders are now from that
party. The new Senate president is Sen. Joan Fitz-Gerald, the first woman to
hold that position, and the new Speaker of the House of Representatives is
Andrew Romanoff. Both of these leaders are also members of the Arts Caucus and
long time supporters of arts and culture for Colorado. Another Arts Caucus
member and Co-Chair is Sen. Abel Tapia who is Chair of the Joint Budget
Committee which is the committee that manages the budget process. As noted
above, we are working through our lobbyists to position the AFC legislative goals
in a way to enhance the likelihood of success. By going to our website www.artsforcolorado.org you can get up to
date on the progress of these important actions. -- Jim Copenhaver, AFC Chair
February
1, 2005 -- Corporate Collections
Opening
Exhibit -- Join us for the 9th
Annual Corporate Collections at the Republic Plaza from 5:30pm - 7:30pm.
Special guests include Mayor John Hickenlooper and leaders of the Legislative
Arts Caucus.
From
Washington -- Arts for Colorado
board member Maryo Ewell represents us in a monthly conference call with
Americans for the Arts. She passes on to us information on what's happening at
the federal level that could affect the arts and nonprofits nationwide. A
summary of this month news includes:
-
Arts Advocacy Day in DC. Will you be in Washington on March 14-15? Could you
be? Do you have friends and family who are arts supporters and live in the DC
area who could attend even if you can't? On March 14, there will be workshops
on a range of important topics; on March 15, we'll be scheduling visits with
Colorado's congressional delegation to talk about the arts. For information,
and to register, go to www.artsusa.org and click on the "Arts Advocacy
Day" icon. And, if you are going, please e mail mewell@chilitech.org so we
can know how many people from Colorado to plan for. Since we have new members
in Congress, let's begin a dialogue with them about the arts.
-
Commercial e-mail: Legislation affecting commercial e-mails is in effect
starting February 18. "Commercial e-mails" include those whose
primary purpose is selling something - which in the case of nonprofits could be
registration to conferences, publications, and more. If the primary purpose of
an e-mail is "commercial," it must be clearly labeled as such in the
subject line, and there must be both physical and electronic ways to
"unsubscribe." " Charity Reform: Several initiatives are
brewing, some very specific, some more general. On the table are conversations
about the distinction between for-profits and nonprofits, the donation of
property such as automobiles, and "unrelated business income.
-
All of these conversations are pertinent to nonprofit arts organizations. Stay
tuned! To keep abreast of new and impending legislation, there are several good
sources: Arts USA and the Action Fund,
as well as Colorado's own CANPO.
Legislative
Holiday" Notes" --
Legislators from the Pikes Peak region sang their support for the arts during
the holidays by joining in a holiday chorus. Sen. Andy McElhany, R-Colorado
Springs, and Michael Merrifield, D-Manitou Springs, joined in the 12 Days of
Christmas Celebrity Chorus as part of the Colorado Springs PhilharmonicÕs
holiday concert. While McElhany ably mastered the Òfour calling birdsÓ line,
Merrifield, a former music teacher, hammed it up on the microphone with his
Òpartridge in a pear treeÓ part. The legislators were joined by local elected
officials and other civic leaders in the singalong. Sandwiched between the two
lawmakers in the chorus were Jim Jackson and Birgitta DePree of Manitou Art
Theatre, a previous recipient of grants from the Colorado Council on the Arts.

JOBS
LOOKING FOR AN EDUCATIONAL AND
INTERACTIVE PERFORMANCE BY
A THEATRE GROUP, MUSIC GROUP OR DANCE
GROUP.
I am the Project Coordinator for the
21st Century Elementary
Grant. There are three elementary
schools in Aurora involved with this
grant: Vaughn, Sable, and
Fletcher. We hold after school programs at
each school from 2:45-4:45 PM
Monday-Thursday with an academic rotation
and an enrichment rotation.
We are having a Family Celebration,
which is an event we invite all of
the kids in the program's families to
celebrate their child's
participation and achievement in the
after school program. We would
like to have this event at Vaughn on
Thursday, February 24th. This date
is flexible, depending on what sort of
group or performance you are able
to get us in touch with.
We are looking for an educational and
interactive performance by a
theater group, music group, or dance
group. We want to bring in the
Arts and Theater to the school because
many of these family will never
be able to experience it
otherwise. We are not looking for a
storyteller. We would like a group
to come in to the school sometime
between 2:45 and 5:00 PM. We can
make it later if those times don't
work. A 45 minute-1 hour
performance is preferred. We are able to
spend between $200 and $300 on the
performance. This program is for
at-risk youth and is grant funded, so I
would like to keep the cost on
the lower end if at all possible.
