Cultural
Arts Council of Estes Park Announces Plans for
A
Downtown Center for the Arts
In mid February the Cultural Arts
Council of Estes Park received the opportunity and is in negotiations to
purchase a 4,750 sq. foot condominium space from Estes Park Urban Renewal
Authority in the Riverpointes Downtown project now under construction at the
site of the old Amoco gas station. The vision is to establish a center
for performing and visual arts in the west downtown corridor on the new
Riverwalk to increase exposure and accessibility for community arts, while
providing a state of the art facility for community and visitor use. In
addition the new cultural arts facility will provide a central location for
area arts information, and a common ground for fostering new programs, arts
education and a year round visitor attraction.
At present the Arts Council is working
on the interior design and use concepts. In anticipation of the diverse
multi-disciplinary needs of the arts, it hopes to create an environment that
will compliment all types of arts programming. The center will include
flexible theater staging and seating with professional sound and lighting
technology. From a young piano student performing in recital, to chamber
music ensembles, dance or small theater productions; the performing arts will
have quality staging in which to perform. In the proposed museum quality
galleries, the prestigious national art exhibition ARTS for the PARKS, Western and Wildlife Art Show or other visual
arts exhibitions will be beautifully displayed. It will also allow the
Arts Council to pursue additional museum quality tours which provides local
Park School District students an opportunity to view national and international
works of art now only accessible by field trips to facilities in the Front
Range. The Arts Council envisions this facility will provide endless
opportunities for arts loving audiences of all ages, with performance art and
visual art available concurrently or as individual events.
The
Cultural Arts Council is in the process of raising the funds necessary to
acquire the property to open the new facility this summer as part of their 15th
Anniversary Celebration in conjunction with the grand opening of the expanded
section of the Riverwalk with the Estes Park Urban Renewal Authority.

If
any of you have ever been involved in seeking a home for your local arts, you
may know what a struggle it is. Sometimes a local government will lease an
unused building. Sometimes a local government will recognize the economic
impact of the local arts and subsidize a facility with no strings attached (Oh
my, what a dream). My philosophical bent has been to try to find a business
model that supports a facility for the arts by the arts without the usual need
for annual grants, donations and subsidies on a large scale. What a concept and
very hard to find! I think we have found a self sustaining model for
Estes Park. However, I must admit that to build the facility will take every
donation, grant and loan that we can find. But what's a million dollars these
days?

Sunday Swingin' Serenades Brings Back
Memories of the Riverside Ballroom
February 21, 2005, Estes Park, CO.
Bring back memories of the Riverside Ballroom and the Big Band songs of Glen
Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Les Brown and more Sunday afternoons from
4:00 - 7:00 PM at Lake Shore Lodge. The cover charge is $5.00 per person
and goes directly to the band. Sunday Swingin' Serenades dinner &
cocktail specials will be available as well as lodging specials for people
coming out of town.
The
Silverado Restaurant at Lake Shore Lodge will host the weekly event. A
dance floor will be laid on the floor, with tables set around the floor for
easy viewing and dancing. The doors to the Grand Ballroom will be open and the
eight-piece swing band, the Board of Directors promises to fill both rooms with
new and classic swing tunes, including Latin rhythms that became popular during
the swing era, and the occasional waltz for those who prefer a slower rhythm.
Core
members of the Kream of the Krop, a big swing band in Greeley, CO., formed the
Board of Directors in early 1993 when the late John Williamson returned to
Colorado bringing with him arrangements for an octet written by Paul Cox of
California. The instrumentation is so unique that the full sound of a standard
big swing band is created even though the band consists of a trumpet, trombone,
three saxes, piano, bass, drum, plus vocalist.
The
Board of Directors typically consists of John Mills on trumpet and flugelhorn,
Darrell Call on trombone, Dick Jamieson on clarinet and alto sax, Dave Cole and
often Andre Dahlke on tenor sax and clarinet, Bob Johnson on baritone and alto
and tenor sax, Bill Bohnenblust on piano, Scott Ford on drum and Ken Wacker on
bass. Other musicians are brought in if someone is unable to make a
performance. Well-known and respected local musicians Ward Durrett on
drums and Ray Young on piano will be filling in upon occasion. According
to Johnson, Dean Bushnell may also make a Sunday afternoon appearance. All of
the musicians are professionals with a great passion for swing era music. The
big rich big band sound will be there no matter who is playing the horns or
filling in other band positions.
The
Board of Directors is pleased to feature Ms. Denise Ford as the main
vocalist. Her song stylings have become well known not only because she
is featured with the Kream of the Krop big swing band, but also because of her
work with her quartet.
Bob Johnson's musical triumphs go all
the way back to the famous Riverside Ballroom in Estes Park when he accompanied
the Dean Bushnell Band as they entertained locals and visitors who traveled
from all around to spend an evening dancing to their favorite swing tunes. The
band often plays for charitable events as a means of supporting local philanthropic
organizations, but also plays commercially for dance clubs, weddings,
anniversaries, and other events. They have played for the Greeley
Philharmonic Orchestra's annual "Wines of Note" event, for the
American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event, for various school programs,
and for many other local charities.
Join
the Board of Directors and revive memories of dance-filled evenings at the
Riverside Ballroom in the Silverado Restaurant at Lake Shore Lodge. With
panoramic views of the mountains and of Lake Estes, Lake Shore Lodge brings
back the old along with creating a new tradition of entertainment and
camaraderie for those who love to dance or just listen to the memorable Big
Band sounds that are an important part of our community history.

FROM
ARTS FOR COLORADO:
From
Washington -- Americans for the
Arts (AftA), based in Washington, DC, is a comprehensive, far-reaching arts
service organization. Its website needs to be on every arts supporter's
"favorites" list (www.artsusa.org) and we should consider joining.
Why?
For
25 years, AftA has been providing timely, research-based, useful materials to
arts groups. It has three goals: increasing public and private sector support
for the arts; ensuring that every American child has access to a high-quality
arts education; and strengthening communities through the arts.
Perhaps
these sound like your goals, too? Well, then, AftA can help. Here are some of
the things it does:
--
"Provides news you can use" that helps you stay abreast of
legislation and trends that can help you can your constituents - everything
from reports from Congress to a salary survey of nonprofit arts professionals.
--
Provides research-based ammunition to help you make your case to YOUR elected
officials and policy-makers. You can contract with AftA to do an economic impact
study in your community. You can use the do-it-yourself economic impact
calculator on their website. You can use their national economic impact study
data. You can get facts and figures on the impact of arts education on kids.
--
Provides television and print ads that you can use with your local media. The
"Arts, Ask for More" campaign - well, go to the website.
--
Provides opportunities for arts workers - paid and volunteer - to gather,
learn, and exchange ideas via national and regional gatherings.
--
Trains young leaders-of-the-future via their Emerging Leaders program.
--
Undertakes such pilot programs as "Animating Democracy," with the
Ford Foundation, in which awards were made to communities wishing to use the
arts to further community dialogue about important issues, in the spirit of
democratic discourse.
--
Has the be-all and end-all bookstore, online, where you can purchase just about
anything you need to train yourself or make your case for the arts. " And
more, much more.
If
I had the ability to join only one other organization (in addition to Arts for
Colorado, of course!), it would be AftA. It doesn't get better than this.
-- Maryo Ewell, AFC Board Member
Federal
Funding -- We have learned that
the President's FY 2006 budget request for NEA and NEH is flat -- no increase
and no decrease vis a vis 2005. Please note that we don't have decimal points
yet, so to be more precise, any increase or decrease would be minimal. The
numbers are $121 million for NEA and $138 million for NEH.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Advocate
Today -- Members of the Joint
Budget Committee need to hear from you now! We want the Joint Budget Committee
to give the Colorado Council on the Arts an additional $200,000 to meet the NEA
match. Below is the message we need you to send to the JBC and the contact
information for each member of the committee. Send this message in an email or
call your representative directly!
"As
you may know, the FY2006 budget proposed by Governor Owens for the Colorado
Council on the Arts maintains the Council's funding at the current level of
$500,000. While this is a good start towards returning to the FY2001
appropriation of almost $2 million, this funding level again fails to meet
Colorado's commitment under the terms of the National Endowment for the Arts
Partnership Agreement to match the NEA's funding level. To ensure a match, the
CCA's budget must be increased by at least $200,000 to $700,000 or the state
will forfeit federal dollars.
I
therefore urge the Joint Budget Committee to add $200,000 to the Council's
FY2006 budget request. After two years during which the NEA granted Colorado a
full authorization in spite of our not adhering to the partnership requirement,
Colorado needs to ensure it will receive its full federal allotment by funding
the Council at the $700,000 level next year. I appreciate your support for this
action. "
