CAC ARTS NEWS No. 177

03/08/05

Editor's Note:

Are you frazzled? Did you wake up this morning and start thinking about what a crazy world we live in where we are overloaded with too much information and   miss information? Trying to keep from being cynical/ Just trying to get the day started with what has to be done? Tired of a lot of questions? Ok!

I'm like you in that I find there are certain things that bring sanity back and a positive outlook on life. I think art - visual and performing - was God's gift in that regard. I know that blowing through a good Dixieland Jazz number on the tuba makes the world go away. Standing in front of an easel putting down some serious paint is as good as sitting under a tree in a summer breeze a hundred miles form anyone. A very good friend and I have been going through old vinyl records of poetry and spoken word to create programs for the radio. Listen to poets for Peace of 1967 and you may get a sense that yes, the world turns, but ever so slowly and as tragic and cynical that statement is, there is some comfort that nothing changes. After discovering the world isn't going to hell in a handbasket despite our best efforts, it is just great to find something creative to do. After my anxiety attack this morning, I'm finding comfort in writing all this blather while listening to some great theater organ music. You are my therapy. Thank you and see you next week.

GRAND JUNCTION'S ART ON THE CORNER SEEKS SCULPTURE FOR EXHIBIT

Grand Junction, Colorado's Art on the Corner Committee and the Downtown Development Authority invite sculptors to submit their works of art to be considered for the 21st annual Main Street Art on the Corner exhibit.  Installation of the exhibit will be Saturday, June 11, 2005, and participating artists are asked to lend their pieces to the exhibit for one year.  All artwork is for sale, and the Downtown Development Authority markets the sculptures through a widely distributed brochure and their website at www.downtowngj.org.  Over 300,000 people view this outstanding display annually.

Sculptors interested in displaying work may contact Art on the Corner at 970-254-3865 or allisons@ci.grandjct.co.us for a flyer and application form, or call Downtown Development at 970-245-9697.  Deadline to submit an application and photos is April 15.  There are 30 spaces available for new works, and pieces are juried to ensure artistic quality and durability.  Fragile, dangerous, or inappropriate pieces are not accepted.

The Art on the Corner exhibit in Grand Junction's Downtown Shopping Park has 100 temporary and permanent pieces.  Annual prizes include the "People's Choice Award", usually purchased as part of the collection, and the $500 Lou Wille Award, given for artistic excellence, creativity, and continued participation.  Since its inception in 1984, over 75 sculptures by 50 artists have been acquired for the permanent collection, with a total value of a half million dollars.

Sculptors selected to participate are provided a free hotel room and a Welcome Reception prior to the installation.  A major downtown streetscape project will begin next year which includes the purchase of $50,000 of artwork, and sculptures accepted into AOTC this year may be considered for inclusion in this project.

More Inclusive Sector CRC's Commitment to Building More Inclusive Organizations

CRC is celebrating the contributions of Pam Durr and beginning a new inclusiveness initiative this month!:

CRC was founded on the belief that all groups deserve the opportunity to access the critical resources they need in order to achieve their missions; and we have worked hard over the years to deliver capacity building services to those most in need.

Collectively, CRC staff possesses decades of experience working in communities of color and with a variety of disenfranchised populations, often providing technical assistance and consulting services to these groups pro bono or at heavily discounted rates.

The Community Resource Center has recently made the commitment to becoming a technical assistance provider for Colorado nonprofits on issues of inclusiveness. We believe that offering training programs and consultancy specifically focused on helping Colorado's nonprofit community become more inclusive fits within our mission of providing the information, tools and strategies organization's need to do their best work on behalf of those they serve; understanding that issues of inclusiveness affect organizations in every area of functionality.

Our board and staff have enthusiastically supported the development of programs and initiatives in this area, and in fact, have formed an "Inclusiveness Committee" made up of both board and staff to lead this effort.

We are proud to announce that we have recently expanded our training course offerings to include the workshop Inclusiveness: Investing in Your Organization's Future. We are hoping that all of Colorado's nonprofits will accept the challenge of achieving their fullest potential by becoming more responsive to the needs and reflective of the communities they serve.

The Colorado Theatre Guild is proud to announce the next six months of Theatre Night Out.

Theatre Night Out will feature, invite guests, host a reception, roll out the red

carpet and in general promote the production of one Theatre Guild member theatre each month.  The idea is to promote theatre and bring in new audiences on the Third Friday of the month, like galleries promote visual arts on First Friday. If an interested

theatre does not have a Friday performance, other days in the third week may be

 considered.

The Guild kicked off this program in January and sold out the subscriptions in 10

days.  This year, it has plans to offer more subscription packages for another six

month package.  This will be achieved by offering two smaller venues on the same night and giving subscribers a choice (on a first come-first served basis) so that more than 65 subscriptions can be sold.

This program has been extremely well received and very popular.  We hope you will all consider submitting a proposal in the next round.  We are asking all participants to

offer a subscription option as well a discount on single tickets for that night.  For

example, several theatres in the first round offered 2-for-1 single tickets and an

even more discounted rate for subscribers.  The discount is up to you and if you have

 any questions, please feel fre
