CAC ARTS NEWS No. 178
03/15/05
Editor's Note:
It
would be nice if I didn't write an editorial. I don't know how others even do
it for a living. It is like a one way conversation except that a few of you
e-mail me back with usually a very positive comment. I look at all the e-mail
addresses that this newsletter enjoys and I often wonder if all of you take the
time to read this long list of arts news. NO you don't have to answer back.
It's just a passing thought and there isn't much to say today. "Take an
artist to lunch" is about the best I can do for today.
Paul
S.
Wait
a minute! I just though of something that needs to be said. I record for our
local FM station many school concerts and yesterday was a banner day! The Mesa
State Wind Symphony came to the Estes Park High School on their spring tour of Colorado.
Dr. Calvin Hofer, conductor lead a 43 member group in short but wonderful
program that was heard only by the school's band members because of schedule
conflicts. I want to say how wonderful it is that Dr. Hofer brings his
musicians on tour. Today is their last concert and if you are in the vicinity
of Evergreen, head for the Evergreen High School. I wish I knew the time. Here
is a list of performers at Mesa State that came from many Colorado schools and
from out of state:
Grand
Junction; Coronado; Central-Grand Junction ; Montezuma-Cortez; Fruita Monument;
Mesa Ridge; Sterling; Glenwood springs; Pine Creek; Delta; Palisade; Niwot;
Mancos; Havre Mt; El Dorado Albuquerque NM; Naperville North Illinois; Savanna
California and Modesto California.
The
Mesa State musicians however, heard the High School band under director Chuck
Varilek and I hope the Mesa State musicians were as impressed with the EPHS
students as I was. I heard (and recorded) the EPHS band again that night in
concert to the public. For sixteen years in March, Mr Varilek has brought
together for a concert, the High School band and the Village Band. A fellow
tubist and retired school director, Ted Stuart put Chuck onto the idea of a
combined concert. I play tuba in the Village band next to Ted and students and
I can tell you what great thing it is to have our 40 piece band blend in with
44 in the school band for two numbers. What a concept!

In April, the Da Vinci Quartet will continue its House Concert Series in
Denver, as well as extend the reach of its popular house concerts to Boulder
with a lecture/demo/performance of Beethoven's String Quartet No. 15 in A
minor, Op. 132.
"It's
a work of contrasting musical insights, and we're delighted to share our
interpretation of it with our audience in Boulder," said second violinist
Susan Jensen. "We're looking forward to performing in one of Denver's
historic homes, as well as Boulder's Wild Sage Common House, which is a new
venue for us."
As
stated on the Wild Sage Cohousing Web site (www.wildsagecohousing.org), this
progressive community "supports connections and relationships at all
levels, consciously seeking and valuing diversity and the challenges it brings.
We look beyond ourselves, and our time, striving to create a better world for
the seventh generation and beyond."
"It's
a mission very much in synch with our musical vision," said Jensen.
We
hope you'll join us as the Da Vinci Quartet's fine musicianship helps usher in
