CAC ARTS NEWS No. 179
03/22/05

Editor's Note:

You have heard I'm sure the cliche that "no good deed shall go unpunished". This is usually after a good deed has happened and is rather a cynical comment when a good deed goes bad. Try this one: NO Good Idea Shall Go Unpunished! that can be said when you have a hot ( or good) idea and you seem to hit so many brick walls in getting the idea to fruition. My work as a designer, by many counts has been successful, so I can't complain. However, in the arts world, have you noticed how much time and energy goes into trying to get a good idea off the ground?  I would like to think that I'm an optimist when it comes to hoping a good idea will be applauded just on it's merits, but it has been my experience that too much energy is spent in either keeping an arts endeavor or agency afloat or even starting a new and great idea. If you are hoping for any government assistance, you will be severally punished. If you don't have all of fellow artists or community on your side, you will be punished. But what the heck, try anyway. Being optimistic is the only saving grace.

Phil Bair, Photography,

showing at the Rotary Gallery at Center Stage in Evergreen

PHIL BAIR, PHOTOGRAPHY AT THE ROTARY GALLERY AT CENTER STAGE IN EVERGREEN:  Now showing at the Rotary Gallery at Center Stage in Evergreen is Phil Bair, Photography.  The show will run, March 28 - April 17, 2005.  An artist reception will be on Friday, April 1 from 5 to 6:30pm. This event is free and open to the public

Phil Bair's photography and fascination with image manipulation goes back to his high school multimedia mischief. In addition to his off-the-wall experiments in the dark room, Phil would make image montages by cutting and pasting samples from his own photography and combining them with photos from magazines and even his father's slide photos of family vacation spots in the West. He would then mount the montages on foam core and take pictures of the pictures with 35mm slide film. The result was eye-popping high school multimedia presentations that earned him the admiration of his teachers and peers, as well as nothing but A's for photography and media.

The Rotary Gallery at Center Stage is open during performances, on Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 2pm, or please call the Evergreen Arts Center for an appointment.  Directions, take Highway 74 to Meadow Drive to Iris to Firewood.

For further information or an appointment, please call the Evergreen Arts Center at 303-674-0056.

MACK THE KNIFE IS BACK IN TOWN

The Threepenny Opera is not exactly your auntŐs usual grand opera. In fact itŐs not grand at all.  ItŐs an opera that claims to be by and about beggars. Even so itŐs one of the most popular musical works of the 20th century.  Written in 1928, it has been performed repeatedly all over the world, and is scheduled for a major Broadway production next year.  Local audiences wonŐt have to wait that long or travel that far to see the show since The Threepenny Opera is coming to the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theater in a production created by THEATREWORKS in collaboration with Opera Theatre of the Rockies.  The production begins April 15 and will continue through May 8 for a total of 18 performances.  Shows are Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30pm, Saturday Matinees at 2pm and Sundays at 4pm.  Tickets are $18-$20, and all shows take place in our theater at 3955 Cragwood Drive (near the corner of Union and Austin Bluffs).  For tickets call 719-262-3232, or log on to our web site at www.uccstheatreworks.com.

From: "Arts for Colorado" <admin@artsforcolorado.org>

The Joint Budget Committee of the Colorado Legislature recently recommended that an additional $200,000 be placed in the Colorado Council on the Arts’ budget.  The two individuals who led the effort to add these funds are Senator Abel Tapia and Representative Tom Plant, with support of others from the Legislative Arts Caucus.  We ask that you communicate the arts community’s appreciation of their efforts by writing or calling their offices.

Although the inclusion of these funds is an important first step, the full legislature will need to consider approval of the funds and you should expect communication from us requesting further action.

Thank you for your help.  If we can retain the full $700,000 legislative appropriation for the Council, it will be eligible to receive up to $700,000 in matching funds from the National Endowment for the Arts.

It occurred to me that I should have included a jpg of The Sixteen in my recent press release, so I am resending the summary of this rare upcoming appearance of The Sixteen.  I'm not sure if the general public in this part of the country is as familiar with the quality and reputation of The Sixteen, considered to be one of the world's finest Chamber Choirs.  Denver is fortunate to be able to present The Sixteen in concert - they are doing a rare West Coast tour, and when I found out that their Utah date fell through, I was able to pick them up.  I hope you are able to do a preview or feature article on them.  If you would like to interview Harry Christophers, I can also arrange that.  I also forgot to include ticket information in the original press release,  which I have included in this listing...

Many thanks!

Performance Now Theatre Company is interested in sharing shop and storage space with a theatre company on the south or southwest part of town.  We've been looking around, and units are about $1400 for @2000 sq. ft., plus utilities (@$100/month)

We are not necessarily in the position to rent a unit for this much, but if we go in

with another theatre company or two, splitting the costs would make it affordable for both. If it was split three ways, we could go with an either bigger unit. This unit would be used mainly for set storage and shop, as well as prop storage.

Update from the Colorado Alliance for Arts Education

 March 2005

"The arts are fundamental resources through which the world is viewed,

meaning is created, and the mind developed." - Elliot W. Eisner

A 2003 study by the National Association of State Boards of Education concluded that the arts are increasingly at risk of being lost as part of the core curriculum. Congress must act to reverse these trends.  Governor Mike Huckabee (R-AR) is the current chair of the Education Commission of the States.  He has made arts education his highest priority and has said, ŇIn the true spirit of No Child Left Behind, leaving the arts out is beyond neglect and is virtual abuse of a child. It is certainly inexcusable.Ó  Now THATŐS taking a stand!!  Please contact your state and local representatives and let them know that the arts are a critical part of education and urge them to introduce and support policies that will keep the arts in schools Đ visit www.votesmart.org to find the contact info for all of your legislators. Your voice does matter Đ let it be heard!!

Englewood's PEAK Project (Progressive Education in Art+Academics for Kids) recently suggested this great idea for grammar teachers:  Create Most Wanted: Grammar Error Posters Put those common grammar errors behind bars with this visual art integration activity.  Design a jail using poster paper or light tag board.  Construct the bars in such a way that paper slips can be slid behind them.  Write common grammar errors on slips of paper and place these behind the bars.   Hang jail keys that contain the correct use of grammar at the bottom of the poster. Jail the bad guys throughout the year as examples are presented. (adapted from The Kid's Guide to Good Grammar, MCKerns, D.)
