CAC ARTS NEWS No. 183

                                    04/19/05

Editor's Note:

I'm sorry you all missed the party celebrating our 2 1/2 years of publishing CAC ARTS NEWS last week. We danced, we laughed, we cried! I was the only one there of course, but hey, (editorial we) have fun.

~~~~~~~~~~~
I received one reply to my question on a September Convention. " How about a mixed bag for the conference? A week's retreat for the arts to be available for those who can break away that long with  a two day conference for those who can only be there for that time.  ... In terms of peoples lives today, a week away with people meeting at dinner / breakfast would be quite wonderful."
I'm going to bug all of you some more on the question until I get more responses.
The Colorado Arts Consortium has had great conferences, conventions or seminars (pick your term) in the past. In the nineties, we had people come from all over the state. Many conventions were two and a half days. Our president, Paul Fiorino has secured a beautiful resort west of Evergreen that would accommodate 250 people (although sleeping in bunk beds) in a very beautiful setting of Bear Creek and ponds. It has been used as a YMCA camp, a camp for the disabled.
Please e-mail me your thoughts on whether it is worth a one day seminar, a two day convention or a week retreat for the arts in September. Don't be negative - be creative. That is what you do isn't it?
Storyhill returns to Swallow Hill by overwhelming popula demand
Denver Ñ Storyhill returns to the Swallow Hill stage on Saturday, May 7 at 8 p.m. Chris Cunningham and John Hermanson bring over 15 years of performing and recording experience with their unique brand of acoustic music featuring tight harmonies and their ÒsoulfulÓ lyrics. Praised by Billboard Magazine, ÒTheir sound recalls the harmonious interplay of Simon & Garfunkel; the pained, plaintive sound of Cat Stevens; and the acoustic juice of the Indigo Girls.Ó Storyhill has garnered a loyal following through touring the country from coast to coast and they continue to play to sell out crowds in the West and Midwest. The Wisconsin State Journal praises StoryhillÕs music, "It's tinged with transcendentalism and romanticism, touching on emotions and issues that almost everyone can relate to.Ó
Independent artists, Storyhill, have sold over 45,000 albums. Along with successful careers as Storyhill, band members Chris Cunningham and John Hermanson also enjoy successful solo music careers. Chris performs as a singer-songwriter and also tours with Justin Roth. John performs with rock band Alva Star.
Do not miss StoryhillÕs performance at Swallow Hill on Saturday, May 7 at 8 p.m. For tickets visit www.swallowhill.com or call (303) 777-1003. Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door. Discounts are available for Swallow Hill members.
A Colorado non-profit organization with twenty-five years of grassroots advocacy for folk, acoustic and roots music, Swallow Hill Music Association is one of the largest institutions of its kind in the United States. With more than 2,000 members Ñ some of whom are also volunteersÑ, Swallow Hill provides a place to celebrate music that is rarely heard elsewhere in the Rocky Mountain Region. Three concert venues house more than 150 performances a year, featuring some of the worldÕs great artists as well as up-and-coming new talent. Swallow Hill provides a valuable and affordable extra-curricular educational resource to the community with more than 50 music instructors involved in more than 240 adult classes and 70 childrenÕs classes annually.
Style-defiant Leslie Helpert performs live at Swallow Hill
DenverÑLeslie Helpert performs songs from her latest CD Cupcakes and Radishes on the Swallow Hill stage on Friday, May 13 at 8 p.m. Jamie Lee of An Honest Tune proclaims Cupcakes and Radishes  Òexudes HelpertÕs lyrical animation and playful delivery.Ó The new album features LeslieÕs signature vocals with guitar accompaniment as well as collaborations with other musicians including Nathan Moore of ThaMusemeant and Brad and Andrew Barr of The Slip. Leslie is known for her songs that evoke emotions and her vocal finesse. Molly Chappell of The Marquee praises, ÒWhile pop music is increasingly becoming dominated by less-than-catchy melodies with flat lyrical tape-overs, Leslie Helpert is breathing artistry into an industry nearly lost and forgottenÑtrue vocal musicianship.Ó
Although Leslie has been compared to such well known singer-songwriters as Ani Difranco, Edie Brikell, Norah Jones and Erika Badu, she continues to defy definition and placement in a genre. ÒHelpertÕs artful performances exhibit rare forms of percussive vocal and guitar melodies, while playing with the spirit of the blues, the compositional creativity of modern jazz and a coy-yet revealing balladry.Ó Ð Ben Gerrard, Flagpole Magazine.
Do not miss Leslie Helpert performing live on May 13 at 8 p.m. For tickets visit www.swallowhill.com or call (303) 777-1003. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Discounts are available for Swallow Hill members.
