CAC ARTS NEWS No. 189

                                    06/01/05

Editor's Note:

Greetings,

I hope many of you have dried out by now. Memorial Day service at the cemetery was in sunshine and we all shed coats, then overcast came in and coats were put back on. Afterward, the wife and I went up to the Fall River Rocky Mountain National Park entrance visitors center for lunch and watched the rain come down as it did the rest of the afternoon. It seems that the art fair in the town park had to endure a soggy time of it. I hope that any other art event did not get washed out. Art events are like throwing a party and hoping that all invited will not find an excuse not to come.

On throwing a party, there is much to consider especially where expenses are involved,. Sell tickets? At what price? Get an underwriter or donor to cover expenses? Sell advertising? This is all coming close to me as I have just put up over three large to have two Gaither Gospal singers fly in from Nashville to come to Estes Park November 29 for a Christmas concert. Covering all the expenses or even making a profit to benefit our non profit radio station is not the goal. The goal is to have as many come that we have seats to enjoy two guys that are the friendliest, warmest and talented artists one would want to meet. We met them on an Alaskan cruise and out of thirty some artists, Stephen Hill and Woody Wright were the friendliest to me and also made "liners" or promos for our station. I'm thinking of $15 an adult ticket and free for children. But it begs the question. And I assume many of you that host events have the same question and I wish I knew the right answer. At least I have a few months to work on it.

Yours,

Paul Saunders

Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park Presents

Thursday Night Live

July 21, 2005

John Denver Tribute II

Brad Fitch and Band

Performance Park on West Elkhorn Ave. in Downtown Estes Park, CO

7:00 PM

Free-will Donation

The Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park presents a second concert honoring the late American music icon, John Denver in John Denver Tribute II, featuring Brad Fitch and his band, as part of its 7th Annual Thursday Night Live Summer performance series at Performance Park in Estes Park.  The concert will begin at 7 pm on Thursday, July 21, 2005 and the audience is asked to bring a blanket or chair for the free evening's performance.

ÒThe purpose of this event is to celebrate the music, the works and the life of John Denver.  Last yearÕs concert was, in general, a review of his greatest hits,Ó Fitch said.  ÒThis year we are going to expand the set list, bringing in some his lesser known songs.  In planning last yearÕs show, I had no idea just how important John Denver and his music still are to so many people.  It was a thrill to have such a large audience come join us to listen and sing along.Ó  The 2004 concert set an attendance record for the Performance Park.

Although Fitch has been performing music in the Estes Park area since the mid 1970s, last year was his first John Denver tribute.  ÒJoining me on stage from last year will be Dan Downs on drums and my wife Kathy Fitch on vocals.  My brother Doug will also be returning to Estes Park from his home in Hawaii, just to participate in this show,Ó he said adding, ÒFor this concert I have included three terrific bluegrass musicians to augment the core group.  On upright bass will be Amy Anderson of the Fort Collins-based T Band and McDailey Trio, Rob Griffith of the T Band on banjo, and Susan Dailey of the McDailey Trio on mandolinÓ.

Bob Buford, who performed on stage at last yearÕs concert, will serve as audio technician.

The Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park, a non-profit 501(c)(3) arts agency, is an advocate for Colorado arts development and a partner in historic theatre renovation.  It's mission is to ensure that the arts are an essential part of the cultural environment of the greater Estes Valley.  Thursday Night Live is a free summer concert series which provides a diverse mix of performing arts suitable for audiences of all ages. In it's 7th season, a the complete summer series can be found online at www.EstesArts.com.

The second John Denver Tribute concert is free of charge, though a free-will donation to the Cultural Arts Council will be accepted.  For further information, contact the Cultural Arts Council at 970-586-9203 or visit Brad Fitch at www.cowboybrad.com.

ASCOT YOUTH BALLET COMPANY

PERFORMS

COPPELIA

On Saturday, June 4, 2005, the Ascot Youth Ballet Company will perform the beloved ballet comedy, "Coppelia", at the Pinnacle Theatre in Littleton.  This is the Ascot Youth Ballet Company's inaugural production, choreographed and under the artistic direction of the internationally regarded and highly-sought-after Nikoloz Makhateli.

"Coppelia" features the artistic and flawlessly-developed technique of several outstanding, acclaimed young dancers from the Ascot Ballet Academy, and other excellent dancers who have trained or been coached by Mr. Makhateli.  Coppelia will be danced by Nadia Belkin, overall winner of the 2005 Youth America Grand Prix Regional Competition.  Ms. Belkin was also chosen as a finalist and danced in the 2005 Youth America Grand Prix Finals in New York City.  Swanhilda will be performed by Evelyn Turner, who took 1st Place in the Senior Classical and 6th Place in the Senior Contemporary divisions of the 2005 Youth America Grand Prix Regionals.  The character role of Dr. Coppelius will be performed by Jackie Nagashima, and Nathan Vander Stoep will perform as Franz.

Several other of Mr. Makhateli's students will also perform, many of whom have been accepted in 2005 to such prestigious schools as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School of Canada; the American Ballet Theatre; Boston Ballet; Universal Ballet; Harid Conservatory; the Rock School of Dance; Pacific Northwest Ballet; San Francisco Ballet; Canadian International Ballet School; and the School of American Ballet, with several students being offered partial and full-ride scholarships.

"Coppelia" is the delightful and fun-loving tale of young love, magic and Dr. Coppelius's ambition to create life-size dolls with souls, set to the musical score of Leo Delibes.  Although Franz and Swanhilda, daughter of the Burgomeister, are betrothed to each other, Franz falls in love with Coppelia, one of Dr. Coppelius's creations.  Nikoloz's Makhateli's artistic vision and choreography, and the Youth Company's portrayals of all of the wonderful characters of "Coppelia" promise an outstanding ballet experience for all audiences, from those well-acquainted with this popular ballet to those who have never had the pleasure of enjoying it.  The production is suitable for all ages, and affordably priced as a must-see for families.

Although "Coppelia" is the Ascot Youth Ballet Company's first ballet, Nikoloz Makhateli has choreographed, danced and directed innumerable other ballets through the United States and other countries.  Mr. Makhateli graduated from the Tblisi National Ballet School and the Tblisi State Institute of the Arts, receiving his Master's Degree as a teacher, repetiteur and choreographer. He performed as Principal Dancer with the National Theater Opera House in (Soviet) Georgia from 1966-1992, dancing all the leading roles in the classical repertoire and then working as a choreographer and Master Teacher with Maurice Bejart's "Mudra-Afrique" School (Senegal), at the National Ballet School (Nicaragua), and the Kirov (St. Petersburg). Mr. Makhateli combines his international experience and lifelong commitment to the artistry of ballet with his joy of teaching and inspired choreography.

"Coppelia" will be presented on Saturday, June 4 at 2:00 pm and 5:30 pm, at the Pinnacle Theatre located at 9136 West Bowles Avenue, Littleton, Colorado.  For more information or to purchase tickets, please call 720-338-1466.

Concerto appearances include performances with the Denver Chamber Orchestra, the Fort Collins Symphony and the Calgary Philharmonic.

Orman, who resides in Denver, also plays the bandoneon and performs with his tango group, Extasis. He maintains a local following and was a past winner of the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Award.

Joining Orman to form a string trio at the Musicale will be Summer Rhodes and Rachel Segal. Rhodes, an accomplished violist, was a national winner of the Music Teachers Associate Collegiate Chamber Music Performance Competition and is an active freelance musician. Segal is a violinist who teaches, coaches chamber music and performs with the Colorado Symphony.

The public is invited Thursday, June 23, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. The Musicale will take place on the grounds of the 120-year-old Johnson House, 1127 North Garfield in Loveland, Colorado, currently owned by Carol Rehme, director of Vintage Voices, Inc.
