CAC ARTS NEWS No. 191

Editor's Note:
Greetings,
BE
POSITIVE IS THE WORD FOR TODAY. I was listening to Charley Rose interview Jim
Leher where Jim said that when you interview someone on a subject, have a
positive outlook. Peace in Iraq? Think positive. Always the rhetorical
question here: how is your art and cultural events shaping up for the summer?
Well, think positive.

SUBJECT:
Buddy Guy to headline inaugural GREELEY BLUES FEST
Legendary blues artist Buddy Guy will headline the first Greeley Blues Fest on Saturday, August 6 at the Island Grove Arena
in Greeley, CO. The daylong festival - co-sponsored by the Colorado Blues Society - also features the Marcia Ball and
The Duke Robillard Band as well
as local and regional favorites including
The Erica Brown Band, Tommy Thomas
and the Jess Redmon Band.
"We hope to make the Greeley Blues Fest an annual event," says Lonnie Cooper,
Director of Cultural Affairs. "Island Grove's facilities are a
tremendous resource for the citizens of Greeley and we are trying to find new
and exciting ways to use them. An Annual Blues Festival should bring
significant positive economic and cultural impact to the community. More
importantly, it will be a lot of fun!"
Buddy
Guy has been playing the blues for nearly four decades and has established
himself as the bluesman of the '90s. Buddy says of his rousing performances,
"It's the blues that keeps you young. When you stretch that string, you're
stretchin' your life." Buddy has certainly stretched his career, selling
nearly 2 million records in the past five years! Buddy has astounded audiences
worldwide with his masterful guitar playing and his electrifying stage
presence.
There's a roadhouse on the musical map
where Texas blues meets Louisiana R&B, a place where Gulf Coast balladry
mixes with rollicking New Orleans boogie-woogie, a place where people only stop
dancing long enough to soak in the intensity of a slow-burning torch song. This
is the place singer/ pianist/songwriter
Marcia Ball calls home. For the
past 30 years, Ball has been raising roofs, tearing down walls and stirring
souls. Over the course of her three-decade career, Ball has earned a huge and
intensely loyal following all over the world through critically acclaimed
albums and continued non-stop touring.
The
primary mission of the
Colorado Blues Society is to
create a greater awareness and wider appreciation of the American indigenous
art form, the Blues. In its Tenth year, the Colorado Blues Society also
leads the Blues in
the Schools community
service education program and sponsors shows to hook up performers and venues
in Colorado. Ambassadors visit schools throughout the state providing
valuable arts education in the Blues. The CBS will provide blues
workshops involving local and regional musicians at this year's Greeley Blues Fest.
The
GREELEY BLUES FEST will be held at the Island Grove Arena in Greeley on
Saturday, August 6 from 11am - 11pm. Tickets are $25 for adults and
$15 for students with proper ID and go on sale June 6 at 10am. Tickets
can be purchased at ucstars.com or by calling the box office at 970.356.5000 or
800.315.2787.

GEORGE WINSTON PERFORMS BENEFIT CONCERT
FOR THE DURANGO ARTS CENTER AND THE
DURANGO COMMUNITY FOOD BANK
George Winston will be performing a
benefit concert for the Durango Arts
Center and the Durango Community Food
Bank Saturday, July 23, 8 p.m. at the
Durango Arts Center, 802 E 2nd Avenue.
This is a very special opportunity to
hear and see legendary performer and
composer George Winston, known
throughout the world for his expansive and
evocative piano performances. All
proceeds from the concert will be donated
to the Durango Arts Center. He asks,
too, that you join him in supporting
the local food bank by bringing a
donation of non-perishable food to be
collected in the DAC lobby prior to the
concert.
Winston has been recording and
performing for 32 years. A native of Montana,
his 10th and most recent recording,
"Montana - A Love Story," evokes the
rich themes of his childhood years spent
in the American Northwest. In
addition to live performances, he is
currently working on R&B piano,
studying the playing styles of great New
Orleans pianists and working on
interpreting pieces by his favorite
composers, Professor Longhair, Vince
Guaraldi and the Doors.
Most of the time George is touring,
playing solo piano in his Summer Show or
Winter Show, solo guitar and harmonica
concerts or solo piano dances. He is
driven by a deep-rooted realization that
his craft is still evolving and
senses that he must do his part to bring
music to life, whether through live
performance, musical interpretation of
others' works or recording and
producing both his own albums and those
of others. Rarely in one location
for more than two days consecutively, he
draws inspiration from the people
and places he encounters.
Tickets for the performance are $25 for
DAC members and $30 for non-members.
Please join George Winston in this very
special benefit concert to support
your Durango Arts Center. For
tickets and more information please call the
Durango Arts Center at 259-2606.
