CAC ARTS NEWS No. 187

                                    05/18/05

Editor's Note:

This has been a banner week folks! I have said here in the past that involvement in the arts is akin to a ride on a roller coaster. The arts are part of us because we dream of things that should be for all to enjoy whether it is a new facility or a talent to share.

I hope this is true for you.

The Colorado Arts Consortium was an idea born from the Colorado Council on the Arts's desire to foster the arts in rural communities and our mission some fifteen years ago was carried out by many dedicated people. John Dandurand comes to mind as one who came to Estes Park in the early stages of the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park. I don't think the history of our arts council is any different than the history of many councils and arts agencies that have been formed in Colorado in the last fifteen years. I say it has been a banner week because the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park just signed a contract to purchase a million dollar arts facility! It has been a dream that has gone through many phases of growing in programs and fostering the local arts so that now we build not because the arts will come, but because the arts are here.

Then the Cultural Arts Council here formed a partnership with private owners of an historic theater in downtown Estes Park just one block from the new Center for the Arts facility. As with most things historic, the theater will need historic renovation. It is on the historic register and will see new life as future grants will allow all year events rather than just summer events. Both press releases are included below this editorial.

On a personal level, I'm involved in both projects. However, I'm involved in other activities and one is a low power (100 watt) FM station that covers all of Estes Park. We are a member of the Arts Council. The station is owned by the United Methodist church here but is programmed to be a community station. We have sponsored the Rocky Mountain Brassworks and another smaller brass group from the Denver area for concerts at the church and at the town performance park. Now I'm happy to report that I just finished securing two internationally known singers and song writers from the Nashville area to come to Estes Park in November for a Christmas concert. I met both on an Alaska cruise last September and I'm thrilled to have them come. I publish many of the press releases from all of you so you may think what is the big deal? For our little station and for me it ranks right up there with New York coming to Vail etc. More later.

Historic Park Theatre & Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park Announce Partnership

May 15, 2005, Estes Park, CO.  The historic Park Theatre and the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park are pleased to announce that the private and non-profit sectors will be working in partnership to develop a performing arts center for the community.  After two months of discussion, Arts Council Director, Lynda Vogel, Ola Stanger, daughter Sharon Seeley, owners of the Park Theatre and Estes Valley Resorts, and employees Susie Kenney and Leslie Williams are ready to move forward and share this exciting endeavor with the community.

Operating since 1913, the historic Park Theatre is the oldest running motion picture theatre west of the Mississippi.  The theatre was constructed by J.L. Jackson in 1913 and completed by C.H. Bond in 1914.  Ralph Gywnn purchased the theatre in 1922 and added the landmark tower in memory of an unrequited love. The towered theatre is still the tallest structure in downtown Estes Park.

In 1982 Ola and Richard Stanger bought the Park Theatre - saving it from demolition.  Unfortunately, the Lawn Lake Flood of 1982 destroyed much of the theater memorabilia that was collected over the years.  In 1984, the Stanger's listed the theatre with the National Register of Historic Places.

The Park Theatre is open from Memorial Day weekend through the middle of the September offering contemporary films.  Because the theatre lacks an adequate heating system it is closed during the winter months.

Formed in May of 1990, The Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park is a privately supported 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to acting as a "Chamber for the Arts" by supporting and promoting all forms of art for the greater Estes Valley.  The Council serves over 40,000 individuals each year and continues to grow.  Volunteers dedicate over 8,000 hours of service to the community annually.

The Arts Council and its members have a vision and passion for establishing a center for the arts in downtown Estes Park.  The Park Theatre can provide a piece of that vision. In fact, the partnership between the private and non- profit sectors fulfills the needs of both.  The Arts Council will be using their 501 (c) (3) status to assisting in pursuing historical renovation grants to give "the lady a lift".  Plans include the installation of a heating system so that the theatre can operate year-round.

In return, the Arts Council will be able to use the theater for displaying art exhibits in the lobby and for musical and theatrical performances in the auditorium- year-round.  In order to remain on the National Historic Registry, the Park Theatre must run a film everyday that it is open.  Discussions have begun to include documentaries, popular and classic films movies in the venue.

The partnership between the Park Theatre and the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park is going to provide artisans and the community a wonderful venue that will also attract visitors to the town year-round.  An Historic Renovation Fund will be started at the beginning of the theatre's season to begin the fund-raising necessary for immediate renovations.

For more information about the partnership between the Park Theatre and the Cultural Arts Council contact Lynda Vogel at the Arts Council at 586-9203 or Susie Kenney at Estes Valley Resorts at 577-6412.

SUBJECT:  Buddy Guy to headline inaugural GREELEY BLUES FEST

Legendary blues artist Buddy Guy will headline the first Greeley Blues Fest on Saturday, August 6 at the Island Grove Arena in Greeley, CO.  The daylong festival - co-sponsored by the Colorado Blues Society - also features the Marcia Ball and The Duke Robillard Band as well as local and regional favorites including The Erica Brown Band, Tommy Thomas and the Jess Redmon Band

"We hope to make the Greeley Blues Fest an annual event," says Lonnie Cooper, Director of Cultural Affairs.  "Island Grove's facilities are a tremendous resource for the citizens of Greeley and we are trying to find new and exciting ways to use them.  An Annual Blues Festival should bring significant positive economic and cultural impact to the community.  More importantly, it will be a lot of fun!"

Buddy Guy has been playing the blues for nearly four decades and has established himself as the bluesman of the '90s. Buddy says of his rousing performances, "It's the blues that keeps you young. When you stretch that string, you're stretchin' your life." Buddy has certainly stretched his career, selling nearly 2 million records in the past five years! Buddy has astounded audiences worldwide with his masterful guitar playing and his electrifying stage presence.

There's a roadhouse on the musical map where Texas blues meets Louisiana R&B, a place where Gulf Coast balladry mixes with rollicking New Orleans boogie-woogie, a place where people only stop dancing long enough to soak in the intensity of a slow-burning torch song. This is the place singer/ pianist/songwriter Marcia Ball calls home. For the past 30 years, Ball has been raising roofs, tearing down walls and stirring souls. Over the course of her three-decade career, Ball has earned a huge and intensely loyal following all over the world through critically acclaimed albums and continued non-stop touring.

The primary mission of the Colorado Blues Society is to create a greater awareness and wider appreciation of the American indigenous art form, the Blues.  In its Tenth year, the Colorado Blues Society also leads the Blues in the Schools community service education program and sponsors shows to hook up performers and venues in Colorado.  Ambassadors visit schools throughout the state providing valuable arts education in the Blues.  The CBS will provide blues workshops involving local and regional musicians at this year's Greeley Blues Fest.

The GREELEY BLUES FEST will be held at the Island Grove Arena in Greeley on Saturday, August 6 from 11am - 11pm.   Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students with proper ID and go on sale June 6 at 10am.  Tickets can be purchased at ucstars.com or by calling the box office at 970.356.5000 or 800.315.2787.

Ramblin' Jack Elliott was doin' it before Bob Dylan though of it...

Denver Ñ Known as Woody GuthrieÕs protŽgŽe, RamblinÕ Jack Elliot was doing WoodyÕs interpretations before Dylan thought of it. Jack returns to the Swallow Hill stage at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 4. Jack idolized Woody, played side by side with him and studied his performances, as well as the way he spoke and the way that he walked. This prompted Woody to claim, ÒJack sounds more like me than I do.Ó

ÒJack Elliott is a self-made man. Some people inherit their riches, others earn them in a slow, painful wayÉ. Jack, in the face of years of discouragement, has slowly made himself into one of the finest pickers and singers and all-around entertainers I've ever seen on a stage,Ó says Pete Seeger. Jack earned the ÒRamblinÕÓ part of his name through his many travels across the country and Europe. Over the years he has performed with the likes of Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Jesse Fuller, The Grateful Dead and Joan Baez. He has influenced and inspired musicians throughout the world including Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Beck and Gordon Lightfoot.  Joan Baez say of Jack, Ò[heÕs] an original ... and they don't even make originals like him anymore! Both the myth and the reality of Ramblin' Jack Elliott are important elements of this country's folk legacy.Ó ÐJoan Baez

RamblinÕ Jack Elliott is not to be missed! For tickets visit www.swallowhill.com or call (303) 777-1003. Tickets are $24 in advance or $27 at the door. Discounts are available for Swallow Hill members.
