THANKS!
Editor's Note:
Thanks
to all who are sending to the new e-mail address. I know it will take some time
for all who send me arts news to make the change so I have been going to the
web site of Estesvalley.net to retrieve last weeks news and press releases and
forwarding them to LP Broadband.net so that I can compile this newsletter on
the old Mac. in Eudora. I lost a few address because I think they used a spam
blocker like the telephone "No Call List". Not much I can do about
it. I can't even say goodbye. So if you are reading this - thanks for
subscribing. However, you can unsubsribe at any time - no problem (except I cry
a lot at losses!)

Fiscal Agency Application Deadline
Contact: Alison Moore
Phone: 303-447-2422 ext 4
Deadline
to apply for Fiscal Agency
The
Fiscal Agency Process has changed. These changes include reviewing proposals
only two times each year and an annual reporting requirement. Members are
advised to read the new guidelines and application process on the BCAA website.
Fiscal
Agency allows individual artists and cultural organizations without 501(c)3
status to apply to funders under the auspices of the Boulder County Arts
Alliance. Fiscal Agency is essentially a re-granting program for grant awards
and contributions to specific pre-approved artists or organizations intended
for purposes directly related to the BCAA mission.
Fiscal
Agency requires that the Arts Alliance accept programmatic and fiscal
responsibility for the applicant. Fiscal Agency is offered to members who
demonstrate a high level of professional practice in the management of their
endeavors. For more information, visit www.bouldercountyarts.org/fiscal.htm
The
deadline to apply for Fiscal Agency is Thursday, September 1, 5:00 p.m., in the
BCAA office in the Dairy Center for the Arts.

The
Glen Eyrie Conference & Retreat Center, Colorado Springs, Colorado
In
an effort to meet the ever growing demands of managing their organizations and
delivering high-quality services, too many of today's leaders have abandoned
their true and most natural leadership talents. Instead of maximizing each
moment through a purpose-driven approach, they are simply going through the
motions without intentionally utilizing their best and most authentic gifts.
Awakening
the Authentic Leader Within pivots around the universal principle that we are
all here to do what we do best, to do what we love, and to create our own
vision of the world. This guided interactive journey is designed to help you
clearly define and embrace your true life's work or vocation - to discover, as
Frederick Buechner says,
"that place where your deep gladness meets the world's deep need."

ARTISTS LEARN TO THRIVE, NOT JUST
SURVIVE
NEW ENGLAND CONSULTANT FEATURED SPEAKER
FOR WORKSHOP
GOLDEN, CO, August 25, 2005--What does
it take to be a
successful artist these days? A lot of
hard work, say
consultants Bruce Baker and Alyson B.
Stanfield. They'll be
hosting "Gain the Edge in Today's
Art Market," a workshop in
Golden, Colorado, on October 29-30,
2005. Especially set up
for artists competing in the crowded art
festival and show
circuit,
the workshop will be equally beneficial for any
artist seeking to put together a better
presentation. At
press release time, artists from eight
states had signed up
to attend.
"Artists who want to make a living
from their art can no
longer aim for just survival," says
Bruce Baker, a longtime
metalsmith, gallery owner, and
consultant from Middlebury,
Vermont. "They have to learn to
thrive. That means doing
what's required as a business owner and
doing it better than
the competition."
Stanfield, an art-marketing consultant,
agrees. "It seems
like everyone is an artist these days.
Artists can no longer
afford to be sheltered in their studios.
They have to get
out there and beat the bushes. They must
distinguish
themselves."
Baker and Stanfield will cover the
following topics in the
two-day workshop:
* Your Personal
Brand
* Better Booth Design
* Effective Sales
Techniques
* Your Artist
Statement
* Your Slides & the Jury
Process
It will all take place in Petroleum Hall
on the campus of
the Colorado School of Mines, from 9
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on
Saturday, October 29 and Sunday, October
30. Registration is
required and costs $99 until September
15 and $125 after
that. Details, accommodations, and a
complete schedule can
be found at
http://www.artbizworkshops.com.
Baker is a metalsmith, gallery owner,
and consultant from
Middlebury, Vermont. He has conducted
over 500 workshops in
the U.S. and Canada over the past 16
years. Stanfield, a
former museum curator and educator, is
the owner of
Stanfield Art Associates, Inc. and
ArtBizCoach.com. Her Web
site helps artists promote themselves
and build their
businesses through publications, online
classes, and a free
weekly newsletter.
A complete media kit is available at

To the supporters of the Colorado Arts Festival
and the Colorado Art Expo
Dear
Supporters of the Colorado Arts Festival and Colorado Art Expo, It is with
great sadness that I send this letter. After 7 years of tireless work, The
Colorado Arts Festival and the Colorado Art Expo have gone out of business. The
story is long and the details are almost out of a crime novel. I'll explain the
situation that has caused the demise of both events and my livelihood briefly,
but first...
I
do believe that the arts in Colorado need a large event to celebrate and
showcase. This I am proud to say was my calling for the past 7 years and I have
truly enjoyed that time. It has been very rewarding in the sense of
accomplishment and seeing the success of the participating artists and the
response from our visitors.
Some
of you may be surprised to know that I have not profited from this event for
the entire 7 years, but remained hopeful. These events have cost me more than a
few gray hairs and a fair share of financial hardship. I have been here for the
long haul and am truly saddened that it must end.
It
is my hope that an event of this type can be created again in the near future.
I know I will miss it and I'm confident many of the supporters and visitors
will miss it as well
I
sincerely thank all of you - the artists - that have participated in both
events for all your support and for the creative work that you do. I know it's
been tough for some of you and to those of you that had a bad time at either
event or didn't make enough money, I'm truly sorry. My first wish was always to
make the event profitable for all of the artists. If I screwed up your tent or your
booth space or whatever, I promise that I tried real hard not to, but it
happened sometimes and I'm sorry.
To
all the countless volunteers over the years that helped out in so many ways,
what can I say... Your the best. Keep up the amazing good work.
To
all the volunteer committee chairs that have worked with me all these years
(you know who you are) I love you! you have all enriched my life, made it a lot
easier and brought the fun factor.
To
everyone else that worked on these events ( the list is way too long and I
don't want to forget anyone) I thank you all very much.
To
all of you visitors and art lovers, keep up the good work. The art is out
there. Go find it in the galleries, museums and studios. Go to the other events
and if a new Colorado Art event arises, please support it. The artists truly
need your support and you know you love it...
Now
here's the story: Unfortunately as many of the artists already know, the
festival and the expo were hit very hard by a check fraud ring. I have been
unable to speak of this until now under the request of the Jefferson County
district attorneys office. Aimee Carpenter who was my assistant for over a year
and half without my knowledge was steeling checking account information from
many of the artists that participated in both events. The business accounts of
both events were also hit more than once. She was then using this information
along with up to 7 other people to make fraudulent checks on the business
accounts and unsuspecting artists accounts. The total amount of funds that
Aimee and her partners managed to cash was above $50,000. Aimee is now in
custody facing numerous charges and a very substantial jail sentence of 8-14
years. Several of the other culprets are still at large but have been charged
and are being pursued. Although I am grateful to the Lakewood Police and the
Jefferson County District Attorneys office for putting the case together and
penalizing the culprits I am sad at the world. All I ever wanted to do when I
grew up was to work hard, make art, trust people and make a happy life for me
and my family.
I'm
sorry and ashamed that my trusting nature brought this fraud into our midst,
But I still have hope at least in this respect, that it's the best way to live.
The
business has suffered in many ways as a result of the fraud and and is
bankrupted.
I
wish you all the best and apologize one last time if you have been
inconvenienced financially, emotionally or in any other way by myself or as a
result of this situation.
Very
sincerely, Brian Nelson
