The Speaker Series on Sunday. Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. will no longer feature

 Murray Ross.  Instead, Suzanne MacAuley, UCCS Visual & Performing Arts

 Department chair, will be exploring the folk lore of The Arabian Nights.

ARABIAN NIGHTS EXPLORES

 MIDDLE EAST WITH SPECIAL EVENTS

 

 In an unprecedented collaboration, Colorado College and THEATREWORKS at UCCS are joining forces to create The Arabian Nights.  The production is a featured part of the Pikes Peak Library District's All Pikes Peak Reads project and will run in the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theater October 7-16, then moving to Colorado College's Armstrong Hall October 20-30.  Shows are Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., Saturday Matinees at 2 p.m. (no matinee on Oct. 8) and Sundays at 4 p.m.  Adults are $22-$25; children 16 and under are only $12 each.  Group discounts are available.  Anyone with a valid Colorado College or UCCS student I.D. receives free tickets (one per I.D.).  Call 262-3232, or log on to www.uccstheatreworks.com to get your tickets now!

 UCCS OPENING NIGHT CELEBRATION - Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. - Cost: FREE

 

 Join us in our lobby before the show to kick off this creative collaboration with belly dancing, music, food and more!

 

 SATURDAY WINE TASTING - Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. - Cost: $20 per person

 

 Take a trip around the world without leaving the lobby!  Saturday evening before the show, we'll have an expert discussing wine from a specific region.  Each tasting will be accompanied by an array of mouth-watering cheeses.

 

CAST PARTY - Oct. 8 after the 7:30 p.m. performance - FREE

 

 Mingle with the cast of The Arabian Nights as they celebrate another magical production.

 Join UCCS Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalaback as she hosts a reception for University Club members.

 

STAGED READING OF "STUFF HAPPENS" - Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. - FREE

 

 UCCS faculty and staff will this political drama written by David Hare.  The play outlines the political events of the last two years which led up to the war in Iraq and its aftermath. Main characters include members of the Bush administration as well as members of Tony Blair's Labor government.

 

EDUCATORS RECEPTION - Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. - FREE

 

 Learn more about the UCCS Theatre Department and the new Major in Visual and Performing Arts at this free cocktail reception hosted by Professor Laura Tesman.

 

STAGED READING OF "HOMEBODY/KABUL" - Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. and Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. - FREE

 

 Award-winning actress Jane Fromme reads this modern masterpiece written by Tony Kushner (Angels in America). The play, set in London and the Afghan capital at the end of the '90s, follows the story of a lonely and over-medicated British housewife -- a "homebody" -- falling under the spell of an out-of-date travel guide for Afghanistan.  When she finally travels to Afghanistan, she discovers there is more to understanding other cultures than simply reading about them in books.

 

FRIDAY NIGHT FEAST -Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. - Cost: $30 per person

 "BLACKS IN THE ARABIAN NIGHTS" LECTURE BY SAADI SIMAWE* -

 Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. - FREE

 

 Saadi Simawe has a B.A. from Al-Mustansiriya University in Baghdad and an M.A. from the University of Nebraska. He also earned both an M.A. in African-American studies and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Iowa. He teaches English and African-American literatures. He also offers independent projects on comparative literature and Middle Eastern literature. He has published translations and fiction as well as articles on African-American, Middle Eastern, and comparative literature.

 

*This lecture will take place in Bemis Great Hall.

Meet the Director Clinton Turner Davis as he discusses the process behind the production.  Davis, an adjunct associate professor at Colorado College, has been a leading force in American theatre for 30 years, having spent much of his career in New York involved with the world-famous Negro Ensemble Company.

AWRT hosts the Network 'N kNosh

 Swallow Hill raises $4,000 to help Katrina relief efforts

 

 Through an agreement with the American Red Cross, Swallow Hill will

 donate $4,000 to the New Orleans' Musicians Clinic raised on the

 September 11 benefit concert. When the New Orleans' Musicians Clinic was

 founded in 1998, they had a simple mission: To sustain our musicians in

 mind, body and soul. (www. wwoz.org/clinic). And now our dedicated staff

 feel that the very soul of our culture is in jeopardy and we are doing

 all we can to keep the music alive.

 

 More than 100 musicians, volunteers and Swallow Hill staff donated their

 time and effort for this event. An estimated audience of 400 fans

 attended and enjoyed the concerts presented by artists including Hudson

 St. Salvage, Janet Feder, Larry Sandberg, Bonnie Carol, Eileen Niehouse,

 Perpetual Motion, Loose Cannon, Harry Tuft, Safe Harbor, Dakota Blonde,

 Mollie O'Brien & Rich Moore, Chris Engleman, Ross Martin, Chris Daniels,
