COLORADO ARTS CONNECTION

                              Colorado Arts news - Part 1 of 2

Send your information and copy for the next CAC Arts News to     Editor and Publisher Paul Saunders at artsnews@lpbroadband.net

  THANKS!

Editor's Note:

I have put a notice in the past issues of this newsletter for you to visit the web site of the Flesher-Hinton music store to see the current and past issues of CAC Arts News.  <http://flesherhintonarts.org/> I greatly appreciate this service, and I thank Andrew Kort for taking the effort to post this newsletter.  Senior Vice President Ken Anderson, has been kind to this editor in bringing the newsletter to the Internet and has said he even reads this newsletter - mostly the parts about music - but that's OK:-) What is your favorite part?

I single out Flesher-Hinton because of their posting the newsletter. However, I know there are many music stores in the state and I hope you visit your local music store for excellent instruments, supplies and service.

If you go to http://www.flesherhinton.com/noteworthnewsnew.html you will see comments on the music store business that  I think you will find interesting. I'm sure the comments on cheap music instrument imports that you find at "big box stores" impact all music stores and music educators across the country.

This newsletter is now a private newsletter and not connected to the Colorado Arts Consortium. I do not have any paid sponsors or advertisers. I have sent this newsletter to 200 or so addresses for the last four years because I enjoy knowing about many of the art activities that go on each week in Colorado and our country and other parts of the world and it is my pleasure to share it with you. It takes about four hours each week to edit all of the material I receive which is no big deal. I hope you look forward to some part of the newsletter, but If you wish to cancel, please e-mail me at my new e-mail address artsnews@lpbroadband.net.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I hope you read the article Touring Colorado Arts by Elaine Marineer, Executive Director of the Colorado Council on the Arts, in the Perspective section of the Sunday Denver Post of October 16. Elaine tells the story of Colorado arts at it's present state and many of us have known the sad lack of state support for the last 15 or so years. On one hand the arts that we have should be celebrated because it's existence is earned by a history of hard work by many of you. On the other hand, it is sad to see programs cut and organizations die off or become marginalized.
 Denver Ñ Swallow Hill and KCUV AM1510 are teaming up for our very first
Halloween concert, folk and roots style: SWALLOWEEN, with Denver
 powerhouse bands The Reals and Zebra Junction, and special guest the
 eclectic banjo master Armando Zuppa. For this extravaganza, the first
 beer is free for patrons coming in full costume, courtesy of
 Breckenridge Brewery.
 The Reals is a hothouse of delicate melody and brilliant compositions.
 Complete with a package of careful arrangements and vibrant textures,
 The Reals pulls from nearly every style of music, from R&B to Americana
 to roots to just plain olÕ Rock ÔnÕ Roll and some gospel. They are now
 promoting their latest album, Majestic: ÒIn everything that The Reals
 seem to do, it's about the space between. Me and we. Loud and soft. The
 band and the audience. Fast and slow. Universal and personal. And the
 mingling of these forces is what makes The Reals work.Ó
 A duo of talented multi-instrumentalists, Zebra Junction takes an open
 form approach to their folk, blues, ragtime, rock, funk and jazz
 collaborations. Working with a collection of rare, vintage, hybrid and
 homespun instruments, Shawn Palmer and Micah Lundy produce a unique and
 interactive musical experience.
 All the way from Rome, Italy, Armando Zuppa is ColoradoÕs own and has
 been for the past nine years. A former guitar-player-turned-banjo-player
 ten years ago, Armando has been praised for his Òformidable and tightÓ
 banjo picking and his performances that range from bluegrass to jazz to
 rock and have been compared to that of BŽla Fleck and Tony Furtado.
 About Swallow Hill Music Association:
 Carrie Newcomer & Zoe Lewis | Friday, October 28, 8 p.m.
 Daniels Hall @ Swallow Hill
 TXS: $15 in advance; $18 day of show
 Describing Carrie Newcomer as a singer-songwriter is a little like
saying Noah was a boat-builder. So much goes unsaid when we fall to easy
labels. ÒTo my mindÑa writerÕs mindÑCarrie Newcomer is much more than a
 musician,Ó says best-selling author of The Poisonwood Bible and The Bean
 Trees, Barbara Kingsolver.
 Zoe Lewis has been called Òclever and evocative,Ó equally a story teller
 and a singer-songwriter. ZoeÕs charismatic performances continue to win
 over fans and garner critical acclaim. Likened to Michelle Shocked (with
 a British accent), and a quirky mix of part Julie Andrews with part Huck
 Finn, Zoe has blended musical styles from all over the globe.
 Battlefield Band | Sunday, October 30, 8 p.m.
 Daniels Hall @ Swallow Hill
 TXS: $18 in advance; $21 day of show
 Under the banner ÒForward With ScotlandÕs Past,Ó the Battlefield Band
 plays Scottish music of rare passion and joy. Inspired by their rich
heritage of Celtic music and fired by the strength of todayÕs Scottish
 cultural scene (which they themselves have done much to create and
 fuel), the Battlefield Band mixes the old songs with new self-penned
 material, and perform them on a unique fusion of ancient and modern
 instrumentsÑbagpipe, fiddle, synthesizer, guitar, cittern, flute,
 bodhran and accordion. This is the gold standard, the band against which
 all others are measured. After 30 years they still lead the way for
 Scottish music introducing new musicians, new music; always involving
 their ever widening audience, as they travel the world.
