Colorado Arts news - Part 1 of 2

Send your information and copy for the next CAC Arts News to     Editor and Publisher Paul Saunders at artsnews@lpbroadband.net

  THANKS!

Editor's Note:

I related last week that Santa was sick and maybe that was a bit overstating the fact that too much candy is too much of a temptation. There is enough left over so there is still too much temptation. But not to worry, Santa got his jolly old figure the old fashion way - bulking up for the winter cold with goodies. (Mrs Claus Cookiies to die for!) He wishes you all a jolly good figure - and attitude!

Now that Ref C has passed and there is no word on any threats to the art funding that was mentioned before the voting, one wonders what the coming year in state funding for the arts will be like. Any guesses?

ARTS for the PARKS

RETURNS to ESTES PARK, COLORADO in 2006!

[Cultural Arts Council Director Lynda Vogel attended the Awards Banquet and Opening Ceremonies in Grand Teton National Park at Jackson Lake Lodge in Wyoming this past September.  Catalogs for the new tour will be available in November.]

June 17 - July 10, 2006 the 19th annual ARTS for the PARKS Top 100 Competition and  National Tour will make its return visit to Estes Park. This nationwide competition for the best images depicting our national park system selects the finest examples from thousands of entries.  The show will also include the Grand Prize Winner from the Annual Mini 100 Competition, a recent addition to the Top 100 Competition.

The ARTS for the PARKS contest was designed to pay tribute to America's National Parks and hopes to honor those artists whose paintings best capture the essence of the landscapes, wildlife and history of the 385 units of our National Park system. It was created by the National Park Academy of the Arts in cooperation with the National Park Foundation. The 2006 Colorado exhibition is sponsored by the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park.

100 artworks on display were selected from 2,400 slide entries submitted by professional as well as amateur artists, ages 18 to 85, from Canada, Australia, and nearly all 50 states.  California artist Morten E. Solberg was chosen as the $25,000 grand prize winner with his watercolor painting "Morning Flight", a depiction of Olympic National Park. This competition is one of the most generous in the world, with cash prizes totaling more than $100,000. All the winners will be exhibited at the show.  The current tour also features nine paintings of Rocky Mountain National Park, and seven Colorado artists where selected into the competition.

ARTS for the PARKS has previously visited Estes Park, Colorado in 1995, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2004.  Each year the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park seeks donations to help underwrite tour costs. In September 1998, the Art CouncilÕs 1997 Colorado exhibition was recognized as the top tour site during the Awards Banquet for ARTS for the PARKS in Jackson, Wyoming.

Lynda Vogel, executive director of the Cultural Arts Council, credits the Estes Park community with the success of the show: Rocky Mountain National Park, the Park School District and faculty, local businesses and over 100 volunteers who donate 1,000 plus hours to plan, install, staff and break down the exhibition each tour.

The Intermediate School gymnasium, a state-of-the-art facility, has climate control, wood floors and more than 7,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space. This fine facility showcases the art organized by geographic regions of the United States with interpretations, background, and exhibition viewing guides available.

Exhibition hours are 10 AM to 5 PM Tuesday through Sunday, and is closed on Mondays.  Admission is $5 per person and children 12 and under are free. The facility is located in the Park School District complex near the Estes Park Fairgrounds. Directional signs will be posted. The exhibition is ADA accessible, so please call ahead to arrange for special accessibility needs at 970-586-9203 or E-mail: cacep@earthlink.net.

Arts Education News Around the Country

The Arts Education Partnership (AEP) held a national forum on the theme of Arts Education and The Creative Economy on October 1 and 2 in Charleston, S.C. Denver was highlighted by AEP as one of five creative communities and/or states that are developing strategies for creating the infrastructures to nurture and support creative economies. Keep up all of your hard work!!

In addition, Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee spoke at the forum outlining what he views are "essentials for education" which are also the skills and traits that business leaders are looking for in future employees. All of these traits are inherent to participation in the arts.

AEP has created an advocacy DVD from all of the enlightening speakers at this conference entitled, Visions of the Future: Education in the Arts. A 1996 DVD entitled The Arts and Children: A Success Story will be included in this new version. Each program is 10-minutes long and is an excellent resource for use in advocacy efforts when trying to reach local and state policy makers and other community leaders. Check http://aep-arts.org in December for availability.

Another resource from the Arts Education Partnership is the upcoming publication of a new book in entitled Third Space: When Learning Matters, the result of its three-year study of how and why the arts transform learning, teaching and school communities. The study was prompted by the findings in AEP's Champions of Change and Critical Links that the arts have multiple positive effects on students and can be particularly beneficial for students struggling to learn. Third Space explores the impact of the arts as revealed in ten case study schools that serve economically disadvantaged communities. Details about the book, including a press release, highlights from the report, and other important details will be available on the AEP web site following the November 15th press conference.

CAAE In The News On Monday, October 31, 2005, CAAE was featured on WB2 News at 9 p.m. highlighting the MAGIC Arts Supply Drive Event. CAAE collected over $15,000 in supplies and made its first delivery to Fort Logan Elementary School in Englewood on Monday. Miss Colorado and Miss Denver were on hand, as were representatives from city, state, and local organizations. The students at Fort Logan were thrilled to receive their new arts supplies. Once again, a VERY special thanks to our sponsors of this program: CBS4, Wild Oats, Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado, and Washington Mutual. And of course, thanks to all of you who donated so generously to this program!

Have you heard of the Arts Learning Network? This network was composed of a group of eight arts organizations and their school (or school district) partners, representing both metropolitan Denver and greater Colorado communities. These partnerships demonstrated their commitment and capacity to pursue excellent, innovative arts education programs. Although the program ended in 2003, the results of their hard work and dedication are expertly documented at www.coloradolearningnetwork.org . Click on the Best Practices link to find detailed explanations of how these arts organizations and their school partners worked together to create outstanding learning opportunities for the students involved.
