COLORADO ARTS CONNECTION

Colorado Arts news - Part 1 of 2

Send your information and copy for the next CAC Arts News to     Editor and Publisher Paul Saunders at artsnews@lpbroadband.net

  THANKS!

Editor's Note:

Congratulations Tina Poe for being selected by Denver Mayor Hickenlooper to fill Denise Montgomery's position. Well earned appointment!

The one thing that comes to mind is the number of women that should be celebrated for their steadfast work in Coloarado arts at all levels. The list would be very long if I had the exact data. I know the list for men in the Colorado arts serving boards and creative positions is long too, but I often felt outnumbered in conferences, conventions and Consortium board meetings.

I almost hate to go out of the house anymore to meetings as I'm the "old man of the sea" looking person at those meetings. Of course I have my fun as Santa. You just have to grow into the part and that I have done. (See attached PDF photo)

Cheers and give thanks for those blessings we have,

Paul Saunders

AND NOW FOR SOME GREAT COLORADO ARTS NEWS

This holiday season:

Invest... In... Imagination

Imagine going into a school where the halls and classrooms are alive with student activity. You are surrounded by colorful murals and artwork, you hear music wafting through the halls. The students respect each other, their teachers, and you. As you walk by the math classroom you see (or in this case hear) students learning their fractions by creating a melody using whole notes, half notes, and quarter notes. In the reading class, students are impersonating a character from the Revolutionary War story they are studying. In this school, practically every student meets or surpasses expectations in reading, writing, math and other subjects.

This type of school can and does exist in Colorado, but your help is needed to ensure that every Colorado student has access to this type of education.

The Colorado Alliance for Arts Education (CAAE) knows the arts play a critical role in making these schools a reality. In Colorado, over 60% of the schools that receive recognition through the Schools of Excellence program rank Excellent or High in their CSAP scores. These schools also demonstrate high parent involvement, strong connections to their community, and offer a curriculum rich in arts and culture - qualities that every parent wants to see in their child's school.

This past year was CAAE's biggest year in its 29 year history!! We served a greater number of schools and students through programs such as Innovative Teaching Through the Arts, an interactive teacher professional development program; the NEA Summer Institute, which taught teachers to use documentaries and other films in their classrooms; bi-monthly editions of @rts-E, now seen by more than 1,500 people; and the MAGIC Arts Supply Drive, through which we collected nearly $20,000 worth of arts supplies -- from musical instruments and clay, to computer graphics software, which benefited over 10,000 students in low-performing, low income schools!

None of this could be accomplished without the generous support of individuals and organizations from across the state of Colorado. As we embark on our 30th year, please join us as we make education inspiring again. Your donation, big or small, goes a long way in letting legislators and policy makers know that you believe the arts are an important part of education. Donate today and be counted!!

All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Contributions can be mailed to CAAE, 3400 W. 38th Avenue, Suite 200, Denver, CO 80211.

Colorado Springs Celebrates Mozart's 250th Birthday

A Yearlong Celebration!

January 1, 2006- December 31, 2006

January 27, 2006 marks the 250th birthday of the great composer, Wolfgang

Amadeus Mozart. Music fans across the world are beginning to celebrate this momentous occasion, and Colorado Springs is marking its spot on the world map as a city that cares about Mozart.

On Friday, December 9, Mayor Lionel Rivera, in the company of State

Representative Michael Merrifield, signed a proclamation recognizing 2006 as a year for Colorado Springs to celebrate Mozart At 250: A Yearlong Celebration of Mozart's Life and Music.

Mozart is certainly one of the most famous classical composers. In his short life, he wrote copious amounts of material, rich with subtlety, musical humor, and grace. From opera and religious work to symphony and chamber music, Mozart was a true master; a musical genius. His work is so important that it remains relevant and magical to this day.

Two longtime residents of Colorado Springs and great friends to the Arts in the Pikes Peak region, Richard and Mary Kay Carlson, decided that music lovers in our area should celebrate this auspicious anniversary, and therefore co-founded the non-profit group, Mozart At 250.

Mozart At 250 is working with community partners to get people talking about Mozart! The Pikes Peak Library District, Kennedy Center Imagination Celebration, and a host of other community and educational outreach organizations are planning events and displays to keep the spirit of Mozart alive. Mozart At 250 also aims to encourage the number of collaborative efforts made by performing arts groups, in such a spirit that all parts of the community can become engaged and inspired by

Mozart's works.

Mozart At 250 celebrates Mozart's work through the publication of a two-volume brochure/calendar of all Mozart performances taking place in the Pikes Peak region, which will be available January 1 at locations around the community. Visit the offices of KCME 88.7 FM at 1921 N. Weber to pick up a copy of the brochure.

For more information about the celebration or the Gala Performance on January 27 with Opera Theatre of the Rockies, please contact Bettina Swigger at 322-6438.

Mozart at 250 sponsors include the Bank At Broadmoor, the U.S. Bank

Private Client Group, the Bee Vradenburg Foundation, and many individual

donors. Mozart At 250's fiscal sponsor is the Pikes Peak Arts Council, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.

Celebrate the Season of Music

Over the years, Augustana Arts has presented some of the most renowned national and international musicians as well as provided an important venue for many Front Range performing groups.

We've donated over 25,000 free concert tickets to senior centers, halfway houses, and other social service agencies.

We've been an important resource to local public and private schools by providing quality music education programs and after school programs to thousands of

children in the Denver Metro Area.

Our City Strings Outreach program provides Suzuki string instruction to children in Aurora who would otherwise be unable to experience such a program.

And, it's because of you.  Your patronage as an audience member and as a donor helps fuel our growth and capacity for outreach.  This month, Celebrate the Season of Music with us through a year-end gift and help us continue to fulfill our mission to

gather community, support the arts and delight the spirit.

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday from the Board

and Staff of Augustana Arts

Fort Collins - OpenStage Theatre & Company presents A Bright Room Called Day, written by Tony Kushner and directed by Peter Anthony. By the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Angels in America, A Bright Room Called Day is a powerful portrayal of individuals confronted with political catastrophe.  The play follows a group of artists and activists struggling for preservation in 1930s Berlin as Germany surrenders to the seduction of fascism. A Bright Room Called Day creates a stark counterpoint between then and now through the outpourings of  Zillah, a slightly paranoid and extremely passionate contemporary American woman. Kushner's first play is a lyrical, savagely funny piece of theatre. The Chicago Tribune heralded A Bright Room Called Day as "Šbrash, audacious and Š a good deal of theatrical fun."

In his production notes for A Bright Room Called Day, Kushner states that "the play relies on being grounded in emotions to make its points and have its effects.ŠPolitics are true passions for these people, not pretexts for private feelings."

Director Anthony calls A Bright Room Called Day "a cautionary tale about how fascism can slowly infect any society. In our country today there is a fear mongering that goes beyond 9-11 and terrorism. It can even be seen in the projected threat of the bird flu pandemic. We're witnessing a disturbing erosion of our right to privacy and freedom and growing incidences of human rights violations and government secrecy - all in the name of security. When a certain line is crossed, democracy is betrayed and the very values that form the cornerstone of our country are compromised. These values go beyond conservative or liberal politics. They are a shared agenda for all Americans.. Everyone in this country values freedom, and A Bright Room Called Day creates a forum for us to become alert to protecting our own personal freedoms."

By turns realistic and fantastic, the plays of Tony Kushner are witty and sophisticated with a wide-ranging examination of politics, sexuality, religion, economics and character. He sees his plays as part of a greater political movement concerned with moral responsibility during politically repressive times. Kushner brings the lofty into the sphere of the approachable by creating everyday characters who collide both comically and tragically on stage. A noted speaker and lecturer, Kushner also speaks about timeless matters - faith, death and life.

Kushner is perhaps best known for his two-part play, Angels in America, for which he has received a Pulitzer Prize, two Tony Awards, two Drama Desk Awards, the Evening Standard Award, two Olivier Award nominations, the New York Critics Circle Award, the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, and the LAMBDA Literary Award for Drama. In 1998, London's National Theatre selected Angels in America as one of the ten best plays of the 20th century. The 2003 HBO production, directed by Mike Nichols and featuring Al Pacino, Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson, garnered five Emmy awards.

Performances of A Bright Room Called Day runs January 7 through February 4, 2006 on Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m. with one Thursday performance on February 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees on January 22 and 29 at 2:00 p.m.  Performances are at the Lincoln Center, 417 W. Magnolia St., Fort Collins, Colorado 80521.

FATT Friday - Friday At The Theatre - is a new offering for the 2005-2006 season that presents a unique event on the Friday after opening night for each season production. All tickets are $10 and audience members of legal drinking age will receive a free beer during intermission. FATT Friday is sponsored by New Belgium Brewing Company. The FATT Friday performance for A Bright Room Called Day is on January 13 at 8:00 p.m.
