HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Send your information and copy for the next CAC Arts News to     Editor and Publisher Paul Saunders at artsnews@lpbroadband.net

  THANKS!

Editor's Note:

It has been said in radio blogs that for all the technology changes, it is always the content that determines success. That should be obvious in all the arts but must be restated over and over to keep from thinking a new technology will save the show.

Dear friends, I don't mind telling you that at 72 (in February 06) that I have seen many changes in media technology but only a little in content. My dad had a wire recorder and loved to take movies on 8mm and 16mm film. I have had to transfer much of the film to VHS video and now I am attempting to transfer the video collection (vast) to DVD. ( I refuse to give up two Betamax machines but reluctantly just sent to trash my 1976 Toshiba Betamax.) I host a program on radio called the 78 Hour as I have old 78s and on tape, now on CDs and in the computer for broadcast. The content is just as great on all the different media as far as I'm concerned. Almost 56 years ago, I met my future wife on a blind date at a drive-in theater and heard Billy Eckstine sing "My Foolish Heart". Our song for ever! (What do kids hold hands to today?) Anyway, I just transferred the 45rpm (mono) record to the computer. Still a heart stopper.

Ah, the play is the thing! The music is the thing! Also the landscape painting, the portrait painting will be created by many forever. However, it is sometimes worth looking into how the masters of centuries ago painted. I met an artist, Frank Covino, last summer who teaches all over the US how to paint as the Italian masters of the 1600's painted. I hope to take his class this coming year. http://www.portrait-art.com/ Some technology is worth bringing back.

If you have too much time on your hands, tired of reading all those books you received at Christmas, go to this website. Wait for it to develop, read the instructions in the little black box with white letters and then look into the future:

http://www.btplc.com/Innovation/News/timeline/index.htm

2006! What will it bring? Some more technology I'm sure. I am an optimist and that it is all good for us as long as "we"are in control. However, for the paranoid, I point you to an article I just read on the Internet that will send you screaming to  a remote island if you think it will come to pass. Go to:

Varsity Formalwear, located at 70 Broadway in Denver, is going out of business, and their sale is spectacular. You can purchase jackets, tails, pants, vests, cumberbunds, ties, and shoes for such prices as $1.00 to $10.00 If you tell Sandy that you are with a theatre group, she will direct you to a large selection of items that are yours for a pittance. Furthermore, if you wanted to purchase a tux for your personal use, you could get a brand new tux fitted for a song--$50-$150. They are trying to clear the place by the end of the year, and it's huge. Finally, as of January 2nd, they plan to GIVE AWAY all remaining items for the following 3 weeks, particularly to theatre folk. These are very nice people, and their inventory is enormous and good. Be sure to appreciate them properly, and tell them that Lynn from Coal Creek Community Theater sent you!

TICKETS FOR BRITTEN'S WAR REQUIEM FEATURING CONDUCTOR MARIN ALSOP NOW ON SALE

The University of Colorado at Boulder College of Music will present a special performance of Benjamin Britten's epic "War Requiem" on Wednesday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Denver's Boettcher Concert Hall. The performance will feature Marin Alsop, Conductor Laureate of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and recently named Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony, CU Director of Orchestral Studies Akira Endo, the University of Colorado Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, the Colorado Children's Chorale, and the combined choirs of CU-Boulder, University of Denver Lamont School of Music, and Colorado State University.

Britten's "War Requiem" was written for the reconsecration of Coventry Cathedral, the church that had been destroyed during the Battle of Britain in World War II. Benjamin Britten had been commissioned to write a piece for a new cathedral that was built next to the ruins of the original structure. The piece is an extraordinary work of reconciliation, and a warning to future generations of the senselessness of war. The work premiered in 1962 receiving immediate critical acclaim and was hailed as a masterpiece.

Tickets are $20 and are general admission. Discounts are available for students and seniors. To purchase tickets, call 303-492-8008, visit the CU Concerts Box Office at 18th Street and Euclid Avenue on the CU-Boulder campus, or go online at <http://www.colorado.edu/music/events/britten.html>http://www.colorado.edu/music/events/britten.html
