  THANKS!

Editor's Note:

TERM LIMITS:

I have been involved in the Estes Park Cultural Arts Council for about 13 years in some relationship or other. As Affilate representative, Advisory Committee, Prsident, Board member, off the board but volunteer and editor of the Council's Arts E-NEWS  (which I publish after this newsletter each week) and now I'm back on the Board again. I mention all this because I'm now closer to the flame as it were and I have been asked to find out what community governments in Colorado have supported with funding and facilities, their local arts organizations. I will be calling many of you.

The reason we would like to know is that we have found that term limits has had the effect of new members who are elected or appointed to town and city governments (and arts groups!) that do not have a clue as to the value of what the local arts are to the community in social and economic terms. Denver does a great job with surveys that show the arts are more valuable than all the sports put together. Some small communities have enjoyed the local government funding the arts and donating buildings to be renovated into community art centers. The Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park would like to make a presentation to the town Administrator and Board of Trustees to make a strong case for supporting the arts in Estes Park with some realistic numbers and case histories. I would like to share that information with you and I hope that you will take my call or even e-mail me for the benefit of us all - before I'm term limited again!

Cheers and give thanks for those blessings we have,

Paul Saunders

Denver, 01/16/06 - Hailing from the Cape Verde islands off the coast of West Africa, Lura comes to Swallow Hill to perform songs from her latest release Di Korpu Ku Alma (Of Body and Soul) on Saturday, February 4 at 8 p.m. "Lura's voice has the depth and sultriness of Toni Braxton with a much more refined delivery and broader range of expressions. Her elegant stage presence is matched by her top-notch band- equally skilled at conveying the Portuguese and West African influences that are the bedrock of the music." -Associated Press. Rising in popularity like famed Caped Verde singer Cesaria Evora, with whom she has toured in the past, Lura has been praised equally for her elegant presence and production and her soulful vocals that have been described as "like a kiss" and "honey voiced." Any comparisons to the "barefoot Diva" Cesaria end there, as Lura performs completely different styles of music from the archipelago in particular, West African influenced batuku and funana music. Her beginnings performing R&B and more pop-styled zouk music flavor her current musical stylings along with influences from Portugal.

Lura deftly mixes musical genres and styles in her album and performances moving from ballads to batuku to pop-influenced dance tunes. The new album Di Korpu Ku Alma, a mixing of traditional tunes and new compositions, has received critical acclaim praised as a "delight." Mark Jenings from the Washington Post writes, "Lura can deliver such irresistible material without sounding like she's auditioning for a Vegas gig Š The slicker tunes are easily offset by the buoyant rhythms and wry lyrics that characterize Lura's music at its best."

Charming Hostess, hailing from San Francisco, is known for their bold and eclectic vocal performances. Their music incorporates doo-wop, Pygmy counterpoint, Balkan harmony, and Andalusian melodies. Their new CD, Sarajevo Blues, sets Bosnian poetry as a form of love and resistance to the brutalization of war. Recently featured on BBC's "The World," this a cappella ensemble has performed throughout the United States and internationally. The trio will be presenting a workshop on New Diaspora Singing on Sunday, February 12 at 1 p.m., where they will teach tweaked traditional songs from Ethiopia, Ghana, Uganda, Morocco, Algeria, Alabama, and Oakland. Students will produce strange sounds, otherwise known as extended vocal technique and will become more coordinated with simple body percussion. This mellow and fun workshop is open to every level. His music interweaves the traditions of Iraqi and Jewish Arabic music with a range of influence originating from the Balkans to India. A peace activist, Dalal devotes much of his time and energy to helping remove ideological barriers between people and musicians from different cultures, in particular between Jews and Arabs. Mr. Dalal performs around the world and was featured at the Nobel Peace Prize gala in Oslo.

Monday, March 13-Tuesday, March 14, 2006

Washington, DC

Register now for Arts Advocacy Day -- the fee is only $75. Entering its nineteenth consecutive year, Arts Advocacy Day is the only national event designed to bring together a broad cross section of America's national cultural and civic organizations. These groups will join hundreds of grassroots advocates from across the country to underscore the importance of developing strong public policies and appropriating increased public funding for the arts.

This year Arts Advocacy Day kicks off on Monday, March 13, with a day of legislative training sessions and guest speakers. We'll teach you everything you need to know about the current arts issues circulating on Capitol Hill and how to lobby Congress for increased public funding for the arts. Throughout the day you'll have the chance to meet with other attendees from your state in order to make the most of your Congressional visits. (The State Arts Advocacy Captain from your state will be setting up meetings with the Members of Congress representing your state prior to your visits. You may also set up your own appointments.)

William Safire

On Monday evening, Americans for the Arts will present the 19th Annual Nancy Hanks Lecture on Arts and Public Policy at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. This year's speaker will be William Safire, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and longtime political columnist for The New York Times. He currently serves as the chairman and chief executive of the Dana Foundation. Mr. Safire will preview new preliminary research results linking brain activity with arts education learning. The lecture will also feature a short performance by the Martha Graham Dance Company.

On Tuesday morning, we'll begin the day with the Congressional Arts Breakfast on Capitol Hill. The Congressional Arts Breakfast will feature brief talks by Members of Congress and other elected officials, as well as celebrity guests. The event is designed to rally advocates immediately before they begin their lobbying visits that day. There will also be time during the breakfast to make final preparations for your lobbying visits with your state delegations.

Arkansas Governor Mike

Huckabee spoke at last

year's Congressional Arts

Breakfast

We hope that you can join us for Arts Advocacy Day. Our success as a strong, unified coalition has been instrumental in advancing key legislative initiatives, including increased funding for the Federal cultural agencies and enlightened tax, international, and education policies. This past year, arts advocates succeeded in securing increased funding for both the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities, as well as increased funding for arts education programs within the U.S. Department of Education.

Your involvement does make an impact, and we hope that you will join ufor this year's important event. The registration deadline and hotel cutoff for this event is Wednesday, February 22. If you have any questions, please contact Justin Beland, Government Affairs and Grassroots Manager at 202.371.2830.
