ART SUPPORT:

Last week I wrote: "I have been asked to find out what community governments in Colorado have supported with funding and facilities, their local arts organizations. I will be calling many of you." This will be a long term project as I'm doing it on my own along with a lot of other things I do. (Makes me wonder if the Colorado Council of the Arts has made a similar survey.)

I received replies very promptly by e-mail from the east rural sector of Colorado. I thank those who replied. I promised to share the information I have received and in

The Holyoke area:

"The story here is that like mothers and fathers, the Arts Council is taken for granted.  It could be said that it's the Board's fault etc. etc. However, the reality is that we work for most every penny we receive.  The County Commissioners do give $200 each season, a mere pittance actually.  We receive nothing from the cities of Holyoke or Haxtun.  On occasion, if we ask, the local foundation gives $2,000 or so for some particular project."

"We have a fine membership Board member who this year through encouragement to all of us who sell tickets and her own pushing raised about $10,000, the most we've had since I've been associated with the Arts Council.  We raise the rest of our revenue through grants."

................. "The surrounding towns--Julesburg, Wray, Yuma, Akron do not have Arts Councils.  Sterling has one that is struggling.  Burlington just restarted theirs last year and it is booming.  That might be a story to contact.  I believe the Activities Director of the Town is the Executive Director and the town is supporting the Arts."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From the Strasburg area:
"History:  We have a concert a month for 7 months and only bring in an average
 of 20 persons.  Our population is 12,000 within the I-70 corridor.  Our ARTS has
 been a losing project with the exception of two-three concerts.  This year has
 been very disappointing.  We are in the red about $600.00.  I'm putting together
 a fundraiser in March to offset the difference, we have sold $200.00 thus to the
 good!!  We get no type of city/state assistance.  I'm suppose to be on the SCFD
 board for the past year and still haven't heard of when and where the meetings are."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I have not included the names of the correspondence as I have not asked permission to do so and I would like you all to be free to give the unvarnished truth of the state of the arts in your area. MY opinion so far is that the struggle for arts funding is more overwhelming than the creative work for the local arts. For a "Quality of Life" state, this is unacceptable!  More next week.

Cheers and give thanks for those blessings we have,

Paul Saunders

Monday, January 30, 2006 - Denver, Colorado - Marking the 10th anniversary of

the death of the great Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu, the Colorado Chamber

Players (CCP) will pay tribute to the brilliant artist with concerts on March

11 and 12, featuring a program dedicated to his work.

*Takemitsu was Japan's most important 20th-century classical music

composer, and his contributions to 20th-century classical music were enormous," said

Barbara Hamilton-Primus, CCP Executive Director and violist. "His music

was among the first from Asian composers to become popular in the West, and he was championed by Leonard Bernstein and Igor Stravinsky.

*Takemitsu often synthesized modern Western music with elements of Japanese

music and instruments. He also frequently drew from the music of Debussy and

Messiaen.

Indeed, in the composer's own words: "I have recognized my own culture

through studying modern Western music."

Virtuoso guitarist Masakazu Ito will perform on the program. "I enjoy

Takemitsu's music because of its poetic beauty and simplicity," said

Ito, a faculty member at the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music as well an active performer, composer and recording artist.

Takemitsu relied a great deal on visual imagery - so it is no surprise that

much of his output was in film music, such as Kurasawa's epicĻ"Ran",

Additionally, many of Takemitsu's titles for his works drew from literary

inspirations, both Western and Japanese.

As one of only two recipients of the William and Alice Hosokawa Fellowship,

the Colorado Chamber Players‰*Ŗ Takemitsu program is presented in cooperation

with the Japan Society of Colorado.
