Dancer hopes to leap into governor's office

By Stuart Steers, Rocky Mountain News

February 10, 2006

Coloradans have wondered for months now who would jump into the race for governor.

As one high-profile politician after another has declined to run, those looking for an alternative to the current candidates haven't had one - until now.

Paul Fiorino vows to leap into the governor's office with a campaign based less on politics and more on soul. A veteran dance instructor who has been involved in the local arts scene for three decades, Fiorino says he will be an independent, nonpolitical candidate who can appeal to those who long for something different.

"This is a campaign of bringing forth life," said Fiorino, who filed his intent to run with the Secretary of State's Office last month. "We need inspiration."

For the past few years, Fiorino said, he has watched in distress as Colorado slashed its arts budget to almost nothing and local schools eliminated art and music classes.

"We've not given value to creativity," said Fiorino. "How can kids be inspired if they don't have the creative arts in their school?"

Fiorino, 51, grew up in Parker when it was a one-road town. He played football and wrestled at Douglas County High School before discovering the world of dance one magical day in the early 1970s.

"My mom brought me to the Denver Civic Ballet and I didn't want to go in," he said. "When I did, I saw men and women jumping around and lifting each other and flying through the air. It was incredible. It was a moment . . . I'll never forget."

The group soon offered Fiorino a scholarship to study dance. Within a few months he was on stage, dancing in the Nutcracker Suite.

"Being a nonconformist, I found this dance thing and realized that was what I was about," said Fiorino. "I found my niche."

A short time later, Fiorino ran into a guy he had wrestled against in high school who had joined the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble and encouraged him to apply. Fiorino was invited to join the largely black company as the sole white male dancer.

Parker Robinson remembers Fiorino as a passionate and competitive dancer who loved helping to break down racial barriers.

"He was in an African-American multicultural company and was so proud of it," she said. "He was wonderful."

For the next several years, Fiorino led the itinerant life of a successful dancer, joining companies in Israel and Dallas and working as a trainer for the New York City Ballet.

In the late 1970s he married and eventually returned to Denver with his wife, launching a career as a choreographer and instructor and running the Ballet Arts Theatre.

In 1993 Fiorino faced his most difficult challenge after coming down with Guillain-Barre syndrome, a viral disease that paralyzed him. After months of treatment, he made a full recovery. "He had the determination and courage to recreate his life," said Parker Robinson. "That was amazing to me."

Fiorino now lives in the small community of Brookvale in Clear Creek County, but he is still active in Denver's cultural community.

He was disheartened by a recent proposal to scale back electives such as music and art in the Denver Public Schools and says that goes to the heart of his campaign's message.

"They're talking about taking out arts education in Denver," said Fiorino. "If they do that, they might as well cut off their thumbs."

"Primarily Found Objects" Opens @ SHY RABBIT

SHY RABBIT proudly announces the opening of its highly anticipated exhibition, "Primarily Found Objects", an Open Group Show, with an Artists' Reception on Saturday, February 18, from 5-9 p.m. This exhibition runs through March 25, with weekend hours of 1-4 p.m. beginning on Saturday, March 4. You are invited to meet the artists and view their work in Pagosa's newest contemporary venue, SHY RABBIT.

This innovative exhibition features the work of 40 uniquely talented local and regional artists. Participants were encouraged to explore their creativity by assembling found objects into unique and interesting artworks. The only criteria in this open, non-juried show was that participants use a minimum of 60% found objects in their creations, and that they incorporate at least one of the three primary colors as well. They were also free to stretch the boundaries of the commonly used definition of "found objects." Awards will be given to two participants creating the most compelling and unusual works.

The SHY RABBIT Artists' Round Table will follow on Sunday, February 19, from 1-4 p.m. A panel of respected Four Corners artists will be in attendance to speak about their own work and philosophies concerning "found art", and to share their thoughts about the show. All are welcome.

SHY RABBIT is located at: 333 Bastille Drive, B-1 & B-4, Pagosa Springs, CO, 81147. For additional information, please call 731-2766, or e-mail shyrabbit01@aol.com.
