Subject: a
chance to make a difference
Hi, this email is to
let you know about an important meeting that will be held on Thursday March 2nd
at 10 AM in the morning at the University of Denver, Craig Hall, in the
community room. (see the map below) It is the March meeting of the
Colorado Commission for Higher Education board of commissioners. - the state
agency which has put into place the pre-collegiate curriculum requirement.
As you may recall,
this is the policy that increases the required Carnegie hours in the tested
areas, plus foreign language and appears to bode ill for the future of music
education (all the non-tested curricular areas) in our state. This
policy is also of concern to the Colorado Rural Schools Caucus, although for
different reasons. The Caucus, because of the work they've already done
in the legislature and in meetings with CCHE, has the opportunity to dialogue
with the board of commissioners about their concerns re: implementation of the
pre-collegiate curriculum requirement and have graciously allowed our issue of
music education, (arts education in general) to be piggy-backed upon their
opportunity, and will address that issue as a part of their presentation to the
commissioners. Please see the attachment for context - it's an article
from the paper.
There will be media
coverage. This is a numbers game. Bodies count. The meeting
where this issue is addressed, and has media coverage needs to be well attended
so that CCHE (the governor, etc) will realize the challenge to CCHE's policy
has support in the public, and is not an issue which is being questioned by a
small constituency - which is essentially the editorial stance of the Denver
newspapers when they were commenting on the legislation Senator Brophy
introduced. The Rural Schools Caucus is our strongest and best ally at
this time and if you can possibly squeeze time out of busy schedules for this
one hour of crucial public policy activism, please do. It is enormously
important.
Please respond to this
email if you are planning on coming so that the Colorado Rural Schools Caucus
will know how to plan.
Thank you,
Cherilyn
